Bully Pulpit

The term "bully pulpit" stems from President Theodore Roosevelt's reference to the White House as a "bully pulpit," meaning a terrific platform from which to persuasively advocate an agenda. Roosevelt often used the word "bully" as an adjective meaning superb/wonderful. The Bully Pulpit features news, reasoned discourse, opinion and some humor.

16-Year-Old Drowns in Dan River in Stokes County, NC

STOKES COUNTY, N.C. (WGHP) - A 16-year-old drowned in a river on Monday afternoon in Stokes County.

The accident happened at Moratock Park near Danbury. Magdalena Andres Juan, 16, drowned after attempting to swim in the river.

Witnesses said the drowning could have been avoided if the victim would have listened to family.

"Her aunt told her to go to the shallow side. She said 'No, it's fine. I can swim.' She said she could swim. But then she just started struggling. It must have been the current," said Rene Peralta.

Emergency officials said the teen was visiting from Guatemala. It took officials more than 20 minutes to find her. Friends attempted to revive the girl but were not successful.

It took officials twenty minutes because they were sitting on the sore waiting for us to pull her out. Its really sad to see that so many people just sat on the shore until she was pulled up. Six of the eight people that were in the water were from my group.
