Blue Ridge Parkway Celebrates 75 Years
LOW GAP, N.C. (WGHP) - The Blue Ridge Parkway will celebrate its 75th birthday with several ceremonies and events this weekend.
The Parkway's 75th Anniversary Festival is a multi-day, multi-venue event staged in and around Cumberland Knob Recreation Area in North Carolina, where Parkway construction began on September 11, 1935.
Gov. Beverly Perdue, Va. Gov. Bob McDonnell, and the principal chief of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians will attend a kickoff ceremony on Friday for the festival. The ceremony will take place at the Cumberland Knob Recreation Area near the Virginia border. Officials are expecting 500 people at the event.
