Republicans ride a wave of victory - Mike Marshall wins Stokes Co, NC sheriff’s race; school board shaken up

(By Leslie Bray, The Stokes News) - After months of political ads in newspapers and campaign signs peppering the roadways, Election 2010 is complete. And as has been the trend in Stokes County in recent years, the Republicans won big--this time sweeping the local partisan races.

For the first time in 20 years, Stokes County has a new sheriff—replacing one Mike with another. The longest running sheriff in county history, Mike Joyce, will hand the reins to one of his captains in the sheriff’s department, Mike Marshall of Danbury.

Marshall defeated his Democrat opponent, Barry Conaway of Walnut Cove, by a large margin. Marshall’s vote total was 10,973--76.33 percent of the total, while Conaway garnered 23.67 percent of the ballots--3,402.
