New King Policy Results in Only Christian Flags at Memorial
KING, NC (AP) — The only flags flying over a public war memorial in King next year will be Christian, despite a compromise designed to end a dispute over the emblem.
The Winston-Salem Journal reports that about 80 residents have applied to fly a flag over the memorial next year. All but three want to fly the Christian flag. The others want no flag at all.
A lottery will be held Wednesday to select 52 of the applications, one for each week of 2011.
The city adopted the lottery after a complaint about the Christian flag. Now any religious symbol approved by the federal Veterans Administration is permitted.
Americans United for the Separation of Church and State has said it is uncertain whether the new policy resolves the issue.
