Bully Pulpit

The term "bully pulpit" stems from President Theodore Roosevelt's reference to the White House as a "bully pulpit," meaning a terrific platform from which to persuasively advocate an agenda. Roosevelt often used the word "bully" as an adjective meaning superb/wonderful. The Bully Pulpit features news, reasoned discourse, opinion and some humor.

Fox News’ Mike Tobin Shares Details Of ‘Unwanted Touching’ By Wisconsin Protesters

(By Matt Schneider, Mediaite) - Fox News reporter Mike Tobin continues to report from Wisconsin, the site of the “unwanted touching” he received yesterday from an angry protester upset with Fox News. Megyn Kelly asked Tobin for an update, as a more peaceful protester held up a “Fake News” sign over Tobin’s shoulder in the background.

Tobin reports on the dwindling amount of protesters remaining at the Capitol building and clarifies some details about his incident yesterday saying, “I got punched in the arm, it didn’t even leave a bruise. I don’t want to make too big a deal about it, but it did cross the line.” Tobin appeared frustrated that he’s been unable to get through most of his live shots without some form of heckling, yet now with a calmer scene, it looks as if the worst is behind him.

Video: L'Enfant Plaza Escalator Malfunction in DC

Riders hurt after Stewart/Colbert rally in Oct.

WASHINGTON (BY JOHN HENREHAN, myfoxdc) -
Surveillance video has been released by Metro of an escalator malfunction at the L'Enfant Plaza Metro Station.

The crowds attending the John Stewart and Stephen Colbert event on the National Mall, Oct. 30th, were huge.

In fact, it was the biggest Saturday rider ship in Metro-rail history.

There are three escalators at the L'Enfant Promenade entrance to Metro.

The middle one and the right one were taking people downward that day.

A security camera at the bottom captured these images.

Teachers’ Union President: ‘Let Us Police Our Own Profession’

Visit msnbc.com for breaking news, world news, and news about the economy

'I said to the chancellor and to the mayor, stop it already, let us police our own profession.'
(Breitbart.tv) - Does she think she's helping her cause? Shouldn't elected officials be responsible for evaluating the performance of teachers who are paid for with tax dollars? Does she really think the public will stand by and allow her own union to be responsible for evaluating their own membership?

Union Goon Assaults Tea Party Member; Protected By Cop

(By Joe Schoffstall, The Blaze) - In Atlanta, GA, a disgruntled union goon assaulted a Tea Party member as he was walking by; taking the man and throwing him into a fence. The worst part about the video aside from the thug is the fact that the police officer protects and let’s the union member get away after it happened right in front of him. He also claims he never saw it…right.

Former president of MADD arrested on DUI charge

(By Cindy Swirko, The Gainesville Sun) - A former president of the defunct local chapter of Mothers Against Drunk Driving was arrested recently by the Gainesville Police Department on a DUI charge.

Debra Oberlin, 48, was arrested after she had difficulty on a field sobriety test. She registered a .234 and .239 on breath alcohol tests. Florida's legal limit for driving is .08.

Oberlin, a Realtor, had no comment when contacted Thursday by The Sun.

Melissa Leo drops the F-bomb in Oscar acceptance speech

(By Liz Kelly, The Washington Post) - Well, there may not be a best actress Oscar curse, but there is now officially a cursing best supporting actress.

Melissa Leo, who won for her role in "The Fighter," was so overcome by her win that she dropped the F bomb during her acceptance speech. Which may just be a first for the Academy Awards. And in the press room after stepping off stage, Leo admitted the Kodak Theater and a live broadcast was probably not the appropriate venue for the f-bomb.

"Those words, I apologize to anyone they offend," said Leo, as tweeted by our own Jen Chaney. "There is a great deal of the English language in my vernacular."

Kathy Griffin's 2007 Emmy acceptance speech was cut from the broadcast when the comedienne said, "A lot of people come up here and thank Jesus for this award. I want you to know that no one had less to do with this award than Jesus."

Too Much Spunk: Louisville Cheerleader Throws Ball, Almost Costs His Team The Game

(By Dan Fogarty, SportsGrid) - A male cheerleader for Louisville threw a ball after a key basket in the final moments of the Cardinals’ 62-59 overtime win against Pitt, resulting in a technical foul that almost cost his team the game.

With 0.5 seconds left, a Kyle Kuric dunk gave Louisville a 62-57 lead. But then, the unidentified cheerleader, who will almost certainly be identified by the end of the day, came onto the court and threw the ball into the air. This resulted in a technical foul, which meant two free throws and the ball for Pitt.

Ashton Gibbs hit the free throws, and the lead was cut to three, and the cheerleader, God bless him, probably wanted to sink into a hole and die. Luckily for him, Gibbs missed a three at the buzzer, and the cheerleader was saved from being the peppiest goat of all time.

Fox News Reporter Gets Hit While WI Protesters Scream ‘Fox News Lies’

(By Matt Schneider, Mediaite) - The Wisconsin protesters are getting restless and angrier as the chants of “Fox News lies” grew louder and louder around reporter Mike Tobin. As some of the protesters eagerly tried to block the camera shot, the picture then switched away from Tobin out on the street to inside the Capitol building. Tobin’s voiceover continued as he exclaimed “a guy just hit me.”

Tobin said he has received much heckling, and that a teacher even told him she hates him because it made her feel good. The “utter lack of civility and harassment of reporters,” as anchor Gregg Jarrett described it, is truly breathtaking and seems like a weird strategy to try and win support for one’s cause.

Such happened during a heated discussion on PBS's "The McLaughlin Group" about the goings-on in Wisconsin:

Democratic Governors Unclear on Whether Voters Should Have Say in Public Employee Pay Hikes

(CNSNews.com) - Democratic governors were critical of how Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker is handling the showdown with the public employees union in his state, but were ambiguous about whether they could support Walker’s proposal to allow voters to approve or disapprove by referendum any pay raise for public employees – including teachers – that exceeds the rate of inflation.

Rose's leg got tangled up in a cable that broke away from his the tow truck as the SUV drove away.

The woman drove for more than a mile with Rose dragging behind her vehicle before he became disentangled.

"My heart hurts so bad for him. Nobody deserves that," said apartment manager Kathryn Shelton. "For a tow, really?"

Ted Kennedy Arranged to 'Rent' Brothel in Latin America, '61 Memo Says

(FoxNews.com) - The late Sen. Ted Kennedy arranged to "rent" a brothel for a night while on a visit to Chile and other Latin American countries decades ago, according to a 1961 State Department memo obtained and published by the watchdog group Judicial Watch.

Judicial Watch released several documents said to be from Kennedy's FBI file. The group said it obtained a cleaner copy of the State Department memo after a mostly redacted version was made public earlier.

The Dec. 28, 1961, memo described a tour of several Latin American countries Kennedy made while he was an assistant prosecutor with Suffolk County, Mass.

Last living US WWI vet, Frank Buckles, dies in W. Va. at age 110

Buckles, who also survived being a civilian POW in the Philippines in World War II, died of natural causes Sunday at his home in Charles Town, biographer and family spokesman David DeJonge said in a statement. He was 110.

Buckles had been advocating for a national memorial honoring veterans of the Great War in the nation's capital.

Megan Fox Sizzles, Strips for Armani Ad

(UK Mail Online) - Models are normally keen to try and find credibility by making the move onto the big screen.

But Megan Fox has gone the other way, forging a new career as a model after success in Hollywood.

Making the most of her reputation as one of Hollywood's most lusted after stars, she strips off for Emporio Armarni's 2011 Underwear and Jeans campaign.

Kid Wins Year Of Free Pizza By Making Half-Court Shot, Becomes Most Popular Kid At School

(By Brad Cohen, SportsGrid) - When 11-year-old Cody Collins drained a half-court shot at last night’s Kennesaw State game, he was justifiably psyched—he had just earned all kinds of playground cred.

After the ball went through the hoop Collins and his friend under the basket ran around the court in jubilation (seriously, a 'year' of free pizza!). The few people in the crowd got insanely excited (like, to a surprising extent)—probably because they knew that had he been anyone other than an 11-year-old, the shooter might have been a little disappointed that his feat earned him nothing but a few mediocre pies from Papa John’s instead of, say, a large sum of money.

But as The Dagger said, Collins 'is' 11, and to him all those pizzas are as good as a duffel bag full of cold, hard currency. What would he do with the cash anyway? Probably buy pizza.

You’ve got to feel for the parents, though, because we all know where the whole neighborhood is going to be hanging out after school.

NYC Caves to Al Sharpton, Removes Pro-Life Billboard

Anti-Abortion Billboard Controversy: MyFoxNY.com

(By Todd Starnes, Fox News Radio) - New Yorkers don’t have any problem with giant billboards featuring half-naked women or men wearing Speedos. But a billboard with a pro-life message has drawn so much outrage, the advertising company that erected it — is taking it down.

The ad showed a black girl along with the tagline: “The most dangerous place for an African-American is in the womb.”

The billboard especially concerned Tricia Fraser. It was her six-year-old daughter in the ad — and she said that no asked her permission.

“I would never endorse something like that,” Fraser told WNYW. “Especially with my child’s image.”

She had taken her daughter to a modeling agency and the photos were apparently used from stock images.

The pro-life group, Life Always, said the billboard’s message is directed at Planned Parenthood and was part of a national campaign tied to Black History Month. The group accused Planned Parenthood of targeting minority neighborhoods.

Planned Parenthood disputed that notion and called the advertisement, a “condescending effort to stigmatize and shame African-American women.”

Bill Clinton’s Ominous Warning: Too Much Ethanol Could Spark Food Riots

WASHINGTON (AP) — With global food prices rising and more corn being diverted to the production of ethanol fuel, Bill Clinton is warning of food riots in poor nations.

The former president told farmers and Agriculture Department employees on Thursday that while producing biofuels is important for reducing America’s dependence on foreign oil, farmers should also look beyond domestic production and consider the needs of developing countries.

“I think the best thing to say is we have to become energy independent, but we don’t want to do it at the cost of food riots,” Clinton said.

"Mitt Romney is proud of what he accomplished for Massachusetts in getting everyone covered,” Romney’s spokesman, Eric Fehrnstrom, told the 'Boston Globe', in the first direct response Team Mitt made to Huckabee's criticism of the health plan in his new book.

Fehrnstrom also put daylight between the Romney health care bill and President Obama's reform package, which is unpopular among voters and is the subject of several lawsuits by different states.

New Study Shows That Offshore Drilling Could Make Alaska the Eighth Largest Oil Producer in the World – Ahead of Libya and Nigeria

(CNSNews.com) – A new study says drilling on Alaska’s Outer Continental Shelf (OCS) could make Alaska the eighth largest oil resource province in the world -- ahead of Nigeria, Libya, Russia and Norway.

The report -- by the consulting firm Northern Economics and the University of Alaska-Anchorage’s Institute of Social and Economic Research -- says that developing Alaska’s OCS could produce almost 10 billion barrels of oil and 15 trillion cubic feet of natural gas, create around 55,000 new jobs and produce $145 billion in new payroll nationally, generating a total of $193 billion in government revenue through the year 2057.

A senior policy advisor with the American Petroleum Institute, the trade group for hundreds of U.S. oil and gas producers, said in a statement about the study that offshore drilling for oil and natural gas can help with the country’s energy and economic needs.

Obama Flashback: 'If Workers Are Being Denied Their Right to Collectively Bargain I’ll Walk on That Picket Line With You'

(By Jeff Poor, The Daily Caller) - Some on the left have questioned if President Barack Obama has done enough to show his support for the pro-labor union protesters in Wisconsin. Indeed, it is true the Obama administration hasn’t shown too much of a willingness to jump into this fight that has placed the Wisconsin state Senate at a stalemate.

However, CNBC’s “The Kudlow Report” has found a video of an Obama 2007 campaign speech from Spartanburg, S.C. which suggests he should be on the frontlines with the protesters right now.

“[I]f American workers are being denied their right to organize and collectively bargain when I’m in the White House, I’ll put on a comfortable pair of shoes myself — I’ll walk on that picket line with you as president of the United States of America.”

FOX Nation: Public Sector Unions vs America

Wisconsin Assembly Passes Bill Limiting Union Rights

MADISON, Wis. (FoxNews.com) - Republicans in the Wisconsin Assembly took the first significant action on their plan to strip collective bargaining rights from most public workers, abruptly passing the measure early Friday morning before sleep-deprived Democrats realized what was happening.

The vote ended three straight days of punishing debate in the Assembly. But the political standoff over the bill -- and the monumental protests at the state Capitol against it -- appear far from over.

The Assembly's vote sent the bill on to the Senate, but minority Democrats in that house have fled to Illinois to prevent a vote. No one knows when they will return from hiding. Republicans who control the chamber sent state troopers out looking for them at their homes on Thursday, but they turned up nothing.

Aw: Jimmy Carter comforted Helen Thomas after latest insensitive comments

Did Jimmy Carter Reach Out to Helen Thomas During Her Scandal Last Summer?

(By Alana Goodman, Commentary Magazine) -
From the 'Falls Church News-Press', which is Helen Thomas’s new employer, comes an interesting bit of gossip. In an otherwise mundane column, the paper’s editor, Nicholas F. Benton, reports on the “handful” of Thomas’s friends and supporters who reached out to her during her controversy last summer — and apparently, one of these supporters, oddly enough, was former president Jimmy Carter:

[Rosie] O’Donnell sent Thomas, now age 90, flowers in sympathy for the highly upsetting incident and, along with President Jimmy Carter, was one of only a handful of her longtime colleagues and friends to reach out to her.
If true, this is certainly fitting. Both Thomas and Carter have been accused of anti-Semitism for their statements about Israel, although Carter hasn’t gone as far as to say that the Jews should “go back to Germany.” Could the former president have contacted Thomas to commiserate about his own experiences?

Nancy Pelosi an Egomaniac?

Pelosi edits honorary resolution...on Pelosi

(POLITICO.com) -
The Democratic National Committee wanted to honor Nancy Pelosi Thursday -- but its praise wasn't good enough for the House minority leader.

When the DNC's Resolutions Committee brought up a resolution commemorating Pelosi's years as speaker of the House, Pelosi's daughter sought to alter the proposal at her mother's behest, adding some of the accomplishments that the elder Pelosi felt the committee had overlooked.

"I have some friendly amendments," said Christine Pelosi, a political strategist, at the committee's session during the DNC Winter Meeting at the Marriott Wardman Park hotel Thursday afternoon. She is a member of the committee.

"You think I'm kidding," Christine Pelosi added, to surprised laughter from the room. The proposed changes, she indicated, came out of a discussion with her mother.

After 143 million miles and nearly a year spent in flight, the vessel launched from Kennedy Space Center at approximately 4:50 pm local time (9:50pm GMT) yesterday.

But there were several tense minutes just before lift-off when an Air Force computer problem threatened to halt everything.

The issue was resolved and Discovery blasted off two minutes and 58 seconds late - with just two seconds of its three-minute launch window to spare.

Fox’s Megyn Kelly Takes On Wisconsin Democrat “Hiding Out In Chicago”

(By Mark Joyella, Mediaite) - Fox News’ 'America Live' had a weird segment Thursday, with Megyn Kelly starting by telling viewers her guest–one of the Wisconsin Democrats who’ve left the state in an effort to block a vote on Gov. Scott Walker’s budget–had abruptly cancelled. Why? Because, Kelly said, “the press found him and others in Illinois and he’s relocating now.”

A back-up guest, Sen. Jon Erpenbach , volunteered to talk to Kelly, and it was an entertaining exchange, with Kelly at one point asking Erpenbach how he can justify staying in Illinois instead of returning to Madison and getting to work. “You have to go do your job. It is not your job to leave the state and cower in Illinois.”

“Megan, we’re not cowering, we are doing our jobs,” he insisted, leading Kelly to recite the oath the senator had taken, requiring that he uphold the state constitution and “faithfully discharge” his duties of office. “How is hiding out in Chicago discharging the duties of your office?”

The senator insisted he was doing his job, answering emails, doing constituent work, and ultimately drawing attention to Gov. Walker’s efforts to balance the budget, he says, at the expense of collective bargaining rights of workers. Kelly said those points had been made, and it seemed time to allow the budget to come to a vote.

“What we do in this country is we vote. You can vote no and you can rail on the senate floor why this is wrong. You gotta vote, Sir.”

That Escalated Quickly: UTEP Coach Tim Floyd Escorted Off Court By Police Officer After Getting Ejected

(By Dan Fogarty, SportsGrid) - UTEP head basketball coach Tim Floyd had to be escorted off the court by a police officer last night after being ejected from a game against East Carolina. UTEP would go on to lose, 83-76.

With UTEP trailing 35-29 early in the second half, Floyd was called for his second technical foul for stepping outside the coaching box, of all things. Naturally, he was peeved, and immediately went after the referee who ejected him. Floyd, who says he had never seen said referee before, had to be separated from him by assistant coaches.

That’s when the police officer stepped in and escorted Floyd off the court. It may have been an overreaction on the officer’s part: at no point did Floyd diverge from the “angry college basketball coach who’s just been ejected” playbook, and he didn’t appear to get physical with the referee. Most likely, the officer was there doing game security, and his natural law enforcement instincts kicked in when he saw two men shouting at each other a few feet away from him.

Suspended Coach And Kicked Player Sit Down, Make Uncomfortable, Compelling TV

(By Dan Fogarty, SportsGrid) - Last month, the head coach at Division III Holy Family University in Philadelphia, pushed and kicked one of his players to the ground, causing him  to injure his wrist and bleed from the mouth. Today, the coach, John O’Connor, and the player, Matt Kravchuk, sat down on 'Good Morning America' to talk about the incident for the first time.

After a short video segment, in which we saw O’Connor break down and cry during an interview with the 'Philadelphia Daily News', the coach (who has seen a 30 year career virtually go up in smoke) apologized to the player.

“Matt, this was an accident. I was just trying to make us a better team that’s more competitive and in doing so an accident happened. It was unintentional by me, and I’m really sorry that it happened,” he said.

But as host George Stephanopolous pointed out, O’Connor’s kick looked pretty intentional. Also, the apology to Kravchuck came after O’Connor said he felt as if he did nothing wrong.

“To be honest, it’s kind of hard to accept your apology because you claim it’s justified and you claim you weren’t crossing the line,” Kravchuck said.

Soccer Player Punches Self In Face In Attempt To Draw Foul

(By Dan Fogarty, SportsGrid) - In possibly the floppiest flop you will ever floppin’ see, Bryan Carrasco, a 19-year old Chilean right back, grabbed an opposing player’s arm and hit himself in the face with it in an attempt to draw a foul. Luckily, Carrasco was caught in the act by the referee, and found 'himself' being called for the foul.

The moment will live on in infamy thanks to Spanish-language program “Gol Zap.” Panelists on the show had a good laugh at Carrasco’s expense, and hopefully the extremely public, extremely viral embarrassment he’s now suffering through is enough to keep him from doing this again.

Prime Time CBS Drama ‘The Good Wife’ Impugns Tea Party as ‘Racist Organization’

(By Brent Baker, NewsBusters.org) - Tuesday night’s episode of 'The Good Wife' on CBS gave prime time legitimacy to the presumption the Tea Party is racist as a lawyer in a courtroom tried to discredit an expert witness (Gary Cole as Sarah Palin supporter “Kurt McVeigh”) who testified against a since-exonerated black defendant, by demanding he admit he’s “a member of the Tea Party.” The lawyer asserts “it is our contention that my client’s prosecution was racist,” citing McVeigh’s “membership in a racist organization,” namely the Tea Party.

Donald Rumsfeld Refuses To Apologize To Soldiers’ Families While On 'The View'

(By Matt Schneider, Mediaite) - Former Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld is proving he’s not afraid of anyone on his media tour, and after escaping some recent comedic and serious interviews virtually unscathed, he was now ready to enter the lion’s den known as 'The View'. The most interesting moment came when Barbara Walters may have caught Rumsfeld a little off-guard, as she twice asked Rumsfeld if he wanted to apologize to the families of soldiers who died during the Iraq war.

Yet Rumsfeld did not think an apology was appropriate, instead repeating his belief that no soldier died in vain. In a more humorous exchange, conservative co-host Elisabeth Hasselbeck suggested that “the First Lady may have had a stronger stance on trans fats than Obama did on Gaddafi,” but the media savvy Rumsfeld, possibly knowing his audience, did not take the bait to bash Obama and surprisingly ended up agreeing with liberal co-host Joy Behar (to much audience amusement) in defending Obama’s efforts at private diplomacy.

LUBBOCK, Texas (NY Post) - A Saudi man has been arrested for allegedly attempting to make bombs for possible use on a series of US targets, including the Dallas home of former President George W. Bush, the Department of Justice said Thursday.

Khalid Ali-M Aldawsari, 20, a Saudi national and a legal resident of Texas, was arrested late Wednesday and faces charges of attempted use of a weapon of mass destruction.

Aldawarsi allegedly spent time doing online research about how to make a chemical-based improvised explosive device (IED), according to the affidavit unsealed in the Northern District of Texas.

VIDEO: Fan Slapped By Mascot, Proceeds To Bleed Profusely

(By Brad Cohen, SportsGrid) - There’s nothing fun about getting punched in the face. But when a giant-headed, white-haired old man gives you a right hook to the nose, it has to be especially demoralizing. The unlucky fan who received a beating (jokingly or not) at the hands of the Vanderbilt mascot, “Mr. C,” knows all about it.

Though there’s nothing new about mascot fights, they usually occur between a couple of people wearing animal costumes. It’s a rare that one of these giant-headed creatures goes after an actual…human, but that’s what happened last night when Mr. C landed a vicious hit on a home fan. It appears this was simply a case of an over-excited mascot trying to rev up the crowd with a mock fight, but the Commodores mascot pummeled the fan hard enough to start a gushing nose bleed before the fan used newspaper to stop the mess.

Apparently Mr. C has some serious guns under that muscle suit. The mascot did seem remorseful as he tried to help the fan clean up the damage, but that wry grin on his face never changed.

To add insult to injury, the fan stuck around to watch Tennessee rally back from a double-digit deficit to pull off a 60-51 upset over No. 18 Vanderbilt. Talk about a rough night.

MSNBC's Rachel Maddow Lies to Jay Leno About Republican Campaign Contributions

(By Noel Sheppard, NewsBusters.org) - As NewsBusters previously reported, MSNBC's Rachel Maddow on Tuesday told a staggering amount of nonsense to "Tonight Show" host Jay Leno concerning what's going on in Wisconsin with the unions and Tea Partiers.

After some additional investigation, it turns out the juiciest whopper of all came a few minutes earlier when she totally misrepresented Republican and Democrat political contributions in the previous elections:

Fox’s Greta Van Susteren Challenges Gov. Walker Over Prank Call Comments

(By Matt Schneider, Mediaite) - Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker continues to answer for the embarrassing ordeal of being the victim of a prank call. Although he didn’t want to be distracted by it any further, Greta Van Susteren last night interviewed Walker and wanted him to respond to a few of the troubling comments he made during the call.

Although Walker claimed he didn’t say anything during the call that he hasn’t said publicly, Greta picked out a few gems that were new to her and that Walker would most likely prefer to take back. When the fake caller pretending to be David Koch suggested to Walker “you gotta love that [Morning Joe co-host] Mika Brzezinski” and moments later said “she’s a real piece of ass,” even though Walker replied ”oh yeah,” its unclear which part his response was aimed at. Greta attempted to get him to respond to this, but instead he just repeated that he’s happy to appear on all news channels. And in an attempt to demonstrate his authenticity, Walker said the prank caller “was going to push for people to come in and cause a disturbance amongst the protesters – I made it very clear, that’s not right, that doesn’t work, it adds no value.” However, Greta humorously stopped him from patting himself on the back too much, reminding him that during the call he actually said he previously thought about creating such a disturbance.

Although it seems surprising Walker doesn’t know who Andrew Breitbart is and doesn’t know how big of a contribution the Koch Brothers made to his campaign, it seems Walker is handling an awkward situation as best as one could. And overall, if in a twenty minute “private” conversation this is the worst he said, then compared to how things could have turned out, Walker should be relatively happy.

Democrats' Risky Stick-Ups

Big business and big labor are institutions with major image problems – except among Democratic politicians and strategists.

RALEIGH (By John Hood, Carolina Journal Online) –
Judging from recent political controversies, it’s clear that state and national Democrats think they will benefit politically by sticking up for Big Labor and Big Business. I don’t get it.

Let’s start with Gov. Beverly Perdue. On Tuesday she issued her first veto of a major piece of legislation. Did the governor choose to pick a fight with Republicans over education policy, or voter ID, or health care reform, or some other issue about which her Democratic base feels passionately and with which she might rally support among swing voters?

No. Perdue chose to veto a bill that would have reduced North Carolina’s fiscal deficit by hundreds of millions of dollars a year – thus making tax hikes or state-employee layoffs less likely. She chose to veto the bill on the grounds that it limited her ability to give grants to large corporations.

I’ll shed employees, cut services, and raise taxes, Perdue is telling the voters of North Carolina, but I refuse to cut corporate welfare.

This is a strategy for political recovery? Add in the fact that the giveaway programs Perdue used her veto to protect – such as Golden LEAF and Job Development Investment Grants (JDIG) – were set up by a disgraced former governor, Mike Easley, from whom Perdue needs to be running away as fast as possible, and you have a political mess.

Unnamed Source Paid for Gov Bev Perdue (D-NC) Campaign Flight

DA Willoughby says other people may be charged

RALEIGH (By Don Carrington, Carolina Journal Online) —
When a Wake County grand jury indicted Robert Lee Caldwell of Morganton Feb. 8 for obstruction of justice for his involvement in a 2007 campaign flight for Gov. Bev Perdue, it mentioned that “cash from an unnamed source” was used to pay for the flight.

According to the indictment, Caldwell solicited a check from Morganton barber James D. Fleming to pay for the flight, and then reimbursed him with cash from the “unnamed source.” Fleming’s check was used to hide the actual source of the funds, the indictment states.

The unnamed source, which the indictment makes clear was someone other than Caldwell, has not been identified and Wake County District Attorney Colon Willoughby told 'Carolina Journal' his investigation of Perdue’s numerous unreported flights is ongoing and other people may be charged.

MSNBC's Chris Jansing Tries to Link Giffords Shooter With Fringe Right-Wing

(By Matt Hadro, NewsBusters.org) - MSNBC's Chris Jansing, referencing a report by the liberal Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) on "active U.S. hate groups," asked Wednesday if the rise of radical right-wing groups coincided with the motives behind Jared Loughner's assassination attempt on Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-Ariz.).

When asked about the "hate groups" report, guest Mark Potok of the SPLC immediately pointed to the rise of "radical right-wing groups" and attributed the rise to "resentment over the changing racial demographics," "frustration over the lagging economy," and "mainstreaming of conspiracy theories."

"The economy since the fall of 2008, of course, has really played into this in terms of unemployment, anger with the bailouts, and so on," added Potok. "It's really ginned-up anti-government feeling, in many ways."

Gay Black Tea Partier Harassed by SEIU Activists

(By Joe Schoffstall, The Blast) - Ahh, the tolerant left. In this video shot at an SEIU protest outside of the Colorado Capitol, two union supporters project class as they tell this man what is best for him since he happens to be black, gay, and wait for it…a part of the Tea Party! They’ve surely heard these kinds of people did not exist.

What’s disturbing about this is that it pretty much seems to sum up the liberal mentality. After all, they do know what’s best for everyone and therefore know how you can best live your life. The lady even wonders why he keeps voting against his best self-interest.

VIDEO: Woman Goes Ballistic Over Tow Bill; Attacks Tow Truck Employees & TV Reporter

A woman went ballistic over a towing bill, is now behind bars

MORLEY (By Ryan Webber, FOX 17) — FOX 17 Reporter Abigayle Sloan thought it was another typical day reporting the news when she walked into Weeks Towing & Auto Repair Monday afternoon. She was there to cover the aftermath of the pileup on North US-131 from the weekend.

"I thought I was going there to cover a story about the big pileup, turns out I became part of it." Sloan tells FOX 17.

Outside Weeks Towing & Auto, dozens of smashed cars filled the lot, most of them from a miles-long series of crashes that closed US-131 in Mecosta County on Sunday. Inside the building, more smashing was about to take place. Our Abigayle Sloan was in the middle of it, and caught it all on video.

Video Exclusive: Reagan endorses Haley Barbour

(By Ben Smith, Politico) - As I wrote recently, Gov. Haley Barbour, if he runs for president, already has in the can perhaps the most striking ad of the 2012 Republican primary cycle -- this direct to camera endorsement of him by Ronald Reagan during his 1982 Senate campaign:

"I'd like to take a moment to talk with you about our country's future and a very special leader - Haley Barbour," says Reagan in the ad, a portion of which can be seen above, and which is not available elsewhere. "The problems of the 1980's are rapidly changing and demanding new solutions and fresh vigorous ideas. I've learned first hand that Haley Barbour has the intelligence, courage and experience to make a great United States Senator. These are difficult times but slowly and surely we are making America prosperous again. With leaders like Haley Barbour we can look to the future with confidence and hope."

Conservative Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) On 'GMA': Don’t Get Angry At The Tea Party For Budget Crisis

(By Matt Schneider, Mediaite) - Republican Senator Rand Paul appeared on 'Good Morning America' and when George Stephanopoulos asked him if he was worried about backlash against the Tea Party from the public who favor a union’s right to collectively bargain, Paul suggested the Tea Party is not where people should direct their anger. “I don’t think the Tea Party started this, circumstances did” Paul commented.

Updates From Indiana: Union Members Chant During Indiana House Invocation

(By Joe Schoffstall, The Blast) - Wouldn’t it be nice if everyone in America had the luxury of skipping work to join in on protests without repercussions?

Here, union members chant during Indiana House Invocation:

Colorado Pro-Union Protesters Wave Mexican Flag While Chanting ‘USA’

(By Jonathon M. Seidl, The Blaze) - Now this is ironic.

During a pro-union rally in Denver at the State Capitol Tuesday, protesters broke out in a random chant of “USA!” As the video will show, the chant seems to be directed at Tea Party counter-protesters who had also gathered. But that’s not the most interesting thing the video will show. While chanting “USA!” one of the protesters can be seen waving a Mexican flag. Watch below:

Irony? Accused Auburn Tree Poisoner Harvey Updyke Is “Living In A Car In The Woods”

(By Dan Fogarty, SportsGrid) - According to a lawyer for Harvey Updyke, the man accused of poisoning Auburn’s iconic oak trees, he is now living in a car in the woods. While it’s sad that anyone would be living in the woods, it’s kind of impossible not to see the irony in this situation.

A quick rundown in case you’re just joining us: Updyke is a fanatical Alabama football supporter who is accused of poisoning Auburn University’s oak trees with a powerful herbicide. Auburn is Alabama’s biggest rival, and the poisoning of their trees (a symbolic meeting place) has become a national story.

Joy Behar: Pro-Lifers are 'Evil and Immoral and Unethical and Stupid'

(By Matthew Balan, NewsBusters.org) - Joy Behar ripped the House of Representatives on her program on Monday for their recent defunding of Planned Parenthood. Behar, focusing on the organization's birth control services, criticized the move as "illogical...because if you are not going to help people with birth control, you're going to have more abortions. So, besides being evil and immoral and unethical, they're also stupid".

The liberal host led her 10 pm program by playing clips from Democratic Congresswoman Gwen Moore's Thursday speech on the floor of the House, where she argued that funding Planned Parenthood was better than having "to give your kids ramen noodles at the end of the month to fill up their little bellies so they won't cry. You have to give them mayonnaise sandwiches." Many in the conservative blogosphere argued that she's hinting that it's better to abort a child than have them live life in such a way. Behar then introduced Rep. Moore and Planned Parenthood Federation of American president Cecile Richards and asked the congresswoman, "What drove you to finally stand up on Thursday and deliver that great speech on the floor?"

MSNBC's Ed Schultz Asks If Union Showdown Is Part Of Fox News Aided Right Wing ‘Master Plan’

(By Matt Schneider, Mediaite) - Ed Schultz took to the streets last night to interview the protesters outside Fox News who were making Glenn Beck unhappy. The protesters were certainly not violent, but sure did have some fighting words aimed at Fox.

One protester blamed Fox News for costing former Wisconsin Democratic Senator Russ Feingold his job while also claiming “Fox and the Tea Party are one and the same.” Another protester alleged “Fox is a megaphone for the kind of ideology and philosophy that is anti-union and against the middle class. I think of them as being anti-patriotic and anti-American.” Last night Bill O’Reilly was curious why there was such hatred directed at Fox News by the Wisconsin protesters and now he’s at least received some potential theories from their New York supporters.

When Schultz returned to his studio, he discussed how Wisconsin Governor Walker is not only receiving favorable notice from Fox News for bringing about a union showdown, but also how he may have been encouraged to do so by powerful conservative forces like the Koch brothers and the Heritage Foundation. Given that Republicans have only been in power a couple of months, Schultz wondered if this could only be the beginning of a right wing “master plan” slowly coming together. With Beck offering up his nightly theories, it looks as if Schultz has decided that he too wants to play that game.

Chris Christie On 'TODAY': I Don’t Have A PAC, I’m Not Running

(By Mark Joyella, Mediaite) - New Jersey Governor Chris Christie has yet again doused hopes from some corners that he might be thinking of running for president in 2012, saying reports that a longtime associate had formed a federal political action committee to capitalize on Christie fever was no sign he’s actually thinking of giving it a go. “I don’t have a federal PAC. That was an old partner of mine. I haven’t done it. I don’t have any plans to do it,” he told the 'TODAY' Show’s Ann Curry. “But I’m not running,”

(Breitbart.tv) - Gov. Walker talks with Sean Hannity about the repercussions of teachers and state employees faking their sick leave with fraudulent doctor's notes. Caltech ends 26-year conference skid

PASADENA, Calif. (ESPNLosAngeles.com) - The Caltech men's basketball team ended a 26-year conference losing streak Tuesday night after posting a 46-45 victory over Occidental in the team's regular-season finale on senior night.

It was the first victory for the Division III Beavers since beating the University of La Verne 48-47 on Jan. 23, 1985, a span of 310 games in Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play.

"Tonight's win is a testament to the hard work each member of this team, the alumni and the supporters have put into this program," third-year coach Oliver Eslinger said in a statement released by the school. "I hope that everyone who has participated in Caltech men's basketball is able to celebrate a little tonight."

Ryan Elmquist led Caltech (5-20, 1-13) with 23 points and nine rebounds. It was Elmquist's free throw with 3 seconds left that was the difference in knocking off Occidental (12-13, 6-8).

Caltech is a world-renowned private research university known more for its accomplishments in science and engineering than jump shots and back cuts. Despite its small size -- the school enrolls approximately 950 undergraduate and 1,200 graduate students and employs about 300 professorial faculty -- Caltech has produced 31 Nobel Prize winners.

The Beavers finished the season 5-20, their best record in 15 years.

Back in 2007, Caltech ended an NCAA-record 207-game losing streak.

Fox News’ Megyn Kelly Takes On Teachers Union President

(By Alex Alvarez, Mediaite) - 'America Live' host Megyn Kelly took a look at the ongoing union protests in Wisconsin, paying special attention to the fact that doctors have been writing notes – on camera, no less – to excuse demonstrating teachers from having to work, despite the fact that some weren’t ill.

Fox News Reporter Confronts WI Doctor Writing Sick Notes

(By Greg Hengler, Townhall.com) - If this "patient" is so close to cracking--as he she expresses here--why is the "doctor" submissively smiling and not concerned over the real psychological sickness of this Union protester?

BTW: Why is Fox the only news organization reporting/confronting these Union block party doctors? Could it be that the MSM swim in the Democrat tank as often as the Teachers' Union? Me thinks so too.

Women Brawl at Denny’s Allegedly Over Syrup and Pancakes

(By Jonathon M. Seidl, The Blaze) - We’ve featured restaurant brawls on this site before, but we’ve never head of any of them erupting over syrup and pancakes. That‘s apparently what caused this fight to break out at a Denny’s in Chicopee, MA over the weekend. The original video’s* YouTube description explained:

The fight started when the couple realized that they had no maple syrup for their pancakes. They asked the table over if they could have some of theirs because their pancakes wouldn’t taste the same without the maple syrup and one of the two girls response was “[bit**], your pancakes look fine to me!” And from there, all hell broke loose.

Obama Quicker Denouncing Gov. Walker than Mubarak

(By JOSHUA MILLER, ABC News) - Thousands in the streets protesting. Chanting workers, young and old, taking over a government building and grinding activity to a halt. Lawmakers fleeing. An executive standing firm in face of the revolt.

It's not the Middle East -- it's Wisconsin.

Gov. Scott Walker, R-Wis., proposed legislation substantially diminishing the collective bargaining rights and benefits of unionized workers, a move that resulted in massive protests from public sector unions that have brought legislative activity in the state to a standstill.

Communist Protester in Wis.: ‘People Are Open’ to a ‘Revolutionary Movement’

(By Jonathon M. Seidl, The Blaze) - Yesterday we brought you video of socialists openly rallying in Madison, WI and trying to recruit new members. Today, we show you that the communists are joining the fray too.

Once again, the MacIver Institute was down at the Capitol capturing video of those flocking to the protests in Wisconsin. This time, videographer Bill Osmuski caught up with some admitted revolutionaries from Chicago who came up to try and spread their message, and told Osmuski they definitely think “people are open to the possibilities of building a revolutionary movement.”

What did the communists cite as evidence? If you said “Egypt” and the unrest “around the world,” you’re right:

Guess What, Chris Matthews: Chris Christie’s Losing Weight

TRENTON, N.J. (The Blaze/AP) — Chris Christie’s weight has become, for some, a big issue. But that could be shrinking, in more than one way.

After MSNBC Chris Matthews bloviated about the New Jersey governor’s weight on Friday (and has done so before), it’s been revealed that Christie has cut more than the state budget his first year in office: The heavyset head-of-state has also dropped a few notches in his belt.

Exactly how much he‘s lost he’s isn’t saying, but his suits have been getting noticeably baggy.

“I’m not going to put any numbers on it because you just set yourself up for failure,” the 48-year-old Republican said.

Tiny town of Stuart celebrates a big win

STUART, Va. (By Lisa O'Donnell, Winston-Salem Journal) - Because she wakes up each morning at 3 to fix biscuits and gravy for the customers at The Coffee Break Café in downtown Stuart, Mary Alley likes to lay out her clothes before going to bed.

Sunday night, there was no question what she would wear on Monday — a white T-shirt emblazoned with the name of Trevor Bayne, the new reigning champion of the Daytona 500.

Bayne's stunning victory in NASCAR's signature race has set the sports world abuzz.

Wisconsin State Senator Smacks Down Chris Matthews: 'You're Completely Uninformed'

(By Noel Sheppard, NewsBusters.org) - MSNBC's Chris Matthews tried Monday to push the liberal media meme that Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker exempted police and firefighters from his budget repair plan because their unions endorsed him in last November's election.

"Well one more time you're completely uninformed," replied Republican State Senator Glenn Grothman who then proceeded to tell the facts to the obviously clueless "Hardball" host:

Chris Matthews Furious About Poll Showing Reagan As America’s Favorite President

(By Matt Schneider, Mediaite) - Every year in honor of Presidents Day, Gallup conducts a poll where they ask Americans who is the greatest United States president? This year’s results revealed Ronald Reagan as the favorite choice among Americans and Chris Matthews was none too pleased, dismissing the poll as just a “memory quiz.”

Matthews was disgusted with the idea of so many recent presidents being listed, as even President Obama made the list at number seven. Yet Matthews was clearly most disturbed when speaking about the supposedly greatest president:

“The greatest president in history according to the American people with their limited memory is Ronald Reagan. Keep in mind these are not historian rankings, these are peoples. By the way you should insist, before anybody participates in one of these ridiculous polls – please list the presidents and then pick the best. Don’t just go with the ones you can remember. It’s like the greatest movie of all time was the one I just went to.”

Some Retirees "Cashing In" On The State

(WGHP) - When state budget writers follow the suggestion from "All the President's Men" to "follow the money," it always comes back to the same place.

Nearly 77 cents out of every dollar from taxpayers goes to salaries and benefits of state employees and retirees, said Brian Balfour of the Civitas Institute, a Raleigh think tank.

Some who no longer work in the state get annual pensions reaching six digits. The News and Observer reported Charles Franklin, who ran part of the state's mental health system, receives a pension of more than $200,000 a year.

Dean Smith, thought to be a multimillionaire, receives a pension of nearly $200,000 a year as well. More locally, Terry Grier, former superintendent of Guilford County Schools, gets a $113,000 pension every year on top of the $300,000 annual salary he gets as superintendent of the Houston Independent School District.

Michele Bachmann to Brody File: 'I’m not queen of the Tea Party'

(By David Brody, The Brody File) - Congresswoman Michele Bachmann tells 'The Brody File' that she is “not queen of the Tea Party,” but if she gets into the 2012 presidential race you can bet that her Tea Party “street cred” will come in handy.

Here’s the political reality: If she jumps in, she would have a check next to the Tea Party box and the Evangelical box as well. That might not make her the queen of the Tea Party, but it sure makes her a strong “Teavangelical.” (A Brody File original word. You won’t find it in Webster’s Dictionary)

Filmmaker is Hijacking the Reagan Legacy

(By Michael Reagan, FoxNews.com) - Last week, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid rewrote history. He said my father, Ronald Reagan, "cherished a famously close friendship with Tip O'Neill . . . . Ronald Reagan knew politics has always been and always will be about compromise. . . . That's why he was more beholden to simple pragmatism than stubborn principles."

Reid would have us believe that Ronald Reagan was the Great Compromiser. My father did, in fact, practice the art of compromise -- but he never elevated "pragmatism" over principle.

Four years before my father was elected president, he told me how he planned to negotiate with Soviet leaders. He'd let the Soviets "choose the place, the room, and the shape of the table." Dad was willing to compromise on nonessentials. But if the Soviets demanded he compromise his principles, he'd tell them, "Nyet!"

Richard Petty Discusses Relationship with Son

HIGH POINT, NC (WGHP) — Even though Richard Petty has not driven a car in a Cup race in almost 20 years, "The King" still makes headlines in today's NASCAR.

Petty still has that magic touch when it comes to dealing with fans and the media, and at 73 he still has that competitive spirit.

Late last year Petty took back over the day-to-day operations of the team that bears his name. Richard had sold a majority stake in his company to Boston Ventures, which then merged the team with George Gillette.

When the team was sold, however, his son, Kyle Petty, was kept out of the car, which Richard admitted strained the relationship between them "for a long time."
