Bully Pulpit

The term "bully pulpit" stems from President Theodore Roosevelt's reference to the White House as a "bully pulpit," meaning a terrific platform from which to persuasively advocate an agenda. Roosevelt often used the word "bully" as an adjective meaning superb/wonderful. The Bully Pulpit features news, reasoned discourse, opinion and some humor.

Analysis of today's Stokes GOP Convention

From a reader who attended today's Stokes GOP Convention:

What a disappointment today at the county convention. One attendee claimed the agenda could have been copied from 1985 and it would look the same. The old guard is still at its finest. They forgot to say the pledge of allegiance until someone reminded them later on. These people are not about democracy or freedom. I am ashamed to have these uncivilized people representing me. Virginia Foxx gave her speech on constituent service and how she works hand and hand with the president. ... They nominated the same slate of officers as in the 2003 convention. I hope they continue on with good health, because they would die before letting anyone new take the reigns. Eugene Lyons amendment for animal rights to be in the plan of organization was defeated today. Rex Baker from Mizpah precinct claimed that animals don't have rights just humans. The RINOs gasp loudly! The second amendment was to remove municipal elected officials from the executive committee. This was approved with a 2/3 majority. They are slowly trying to limit the votes of the people in this county. If you are not the chosen one by the RINOs then they will strip you of your vote. How disappointing to see these people represent us. These are the people that have to interact with our state and national GOP.

The Stokes County GOP organization has not been a Republican group for quite a while. The assorted fruits and nuts, Becky Boles, Selwyn Matthews, Eugene Lyons, have decided to camp out on the periphery of the organization to ensure that it does not return to the mode under which it operated between 1992 and 1998.

There has not been a seriously Republican majority there for quite some time. It creates an interesting dichotomy in that most of the elected officials in Stokes County are quite conservative, while the GOP organization is simply Democrat light. This is somewhat inevitable given the sudden power vaccuum left when the organization was converted from the Buster Robertson/Willis Overby fan club back into something resembling a political group.

Given that the national mood of the GOP is swinging at a breakneck pace to the left, it should surprise no one that the Stokes GOP would simply flounder for a while. If a strong leader emerges in the next few years, I'm sure the organization will resume some direction. However, I doubt that direction will be to the right unless the state and national parties make such a shift.
