Bully Pulpit

The term "bully pulpit" stems from President Theodore Roosevelt's reference to the White House as a "bully pulpit," meaning a terrific platform from which to persuasively advocate an agenda. Roosevelt often used the word "bully" as an adjective meaning superb/wonderful. The Bully Pulpit features news, reasoned discourse, opinion and some humor.

Steve Brenneis responds to Behethland B. Clark:

"Our schools need money"

Our schools always need money. And the more money we give them, the more they want. And they never get any better, they just get more expensive. Spare me that line. I've been there, done that.

You need to listen more closely. The Republicans aren't bitching because taxes went up, they're bitching because taxes keep going up, to the point that half of everything we earn goes to the government, and every year the beast just gets hungrier. All you public school fanatics keep telling us that if we'll just spend a little more money on the schools, Nirvana will ensue. In NC, 65 cents on every dollar spent by the government goes to the schools. Not to put too fine an edge on it, but our schools still suck. We could just go ahead and pony up every red cent we earn, handing it over to the schools and they would still weep and moan that they are under-funded. A pox on them.

I haven't mentioned morality once in this discussion, so I don't know from where you getting that line of argument. I also have given no indication that I want to see people's spending regulated by the government. Quite the contrary. I want to see the welfare state eliminated and social security shut down.

The lottery in NC is just another scam on the taxpayers, fronted by the school groupies who are enthralled that we're about to throw another potload of money at them, and as a wonderful side benefit, the source of the money and the accountability for it will be almost invisible. If you ever want to see someone from the education blob go bug-eyed and foam at the mouth, just suggest that they be held accountable for the money they spend. I would wager real money that three years from now, the school tar-pit will still be moaning pitifully about how badly it needs more money.
