Bully Pulpit

The term "bully pulpit" stems from President Theodore Roosevelt's reference to the White House as a "bully pulpit," meaning a terrific platform from which to persuasively advocate an agenda. Roosevelt often used the word "bully" as an adjective meaning superb/wonderful. The Bully Pulpit features news, reasoned discourse, opinion and some humor.

Easy for governor to take high ground when legislators lie low

RALEIGH - In politics, as in combat, the successful warrior grabs the high ground. In recent years, as he has battled legislative leaders of his own party, Gov. Mike Easley has become adept at taking the hills so he can shoot down on his hapless foes.
