Bully Pulpit

The term "bully pulpit" stems from President Theodore Roosevelt's reference to the White House as a "bully pulpit," meaning a terrific platform from which to persuasively advocate an agenda. Roosevelt often used the word "bully" as an adjective meaning superb/wonderful. The Bully Pulpit features news, reasoned discourse, opinion and some humor.

RE: Newsertainment

"Fox's theme? 'Liberals Are Wrecking America, But You Decide.' "

I guess that's as opposed to the steady diet of "Conservatives Are Wrecking America, We'll decide For You" that we get from CNN and MSNBC. Or how about the continuous drone of "Everything Wrong in America is George Bush's Fault" from CBS, or one of my (least) favorites, "America Sucks, You Heard It Here First," from ABC.

It's pretty much all newsertainment, the only issue is who is the target audience. Rupert Murdoch, a self-avowed flaming liberal saw that the old media had swung so far to the left that they had lost considerable market share. The ideologues on their editorial boards were such dedicated leftists that they didn't even notice. Murdoch hired Roger Ailes who stepped in and pulled the hard news portions of the channel back to the center and began offering non-news content that appealed to many on the right of center. Pure capitalism at work. And, as Andy points out, hiring some of the most beautiful women in television news so that the presentation is easy on the eyes was just plain inspired. It's one of those Wal-Mart stories that infuriate liberals so much. And doubly infuriating (for liberals) is the fact that there is some conservative content and the channel isn't going down in flames, quite the contrary, it is now the number one cable news outlet. Meanwhile, the wheels have come off Air America and it is careening into the ditch and Al-TV looks poised to follow suit.
