Bully Pulpit

The term "bully pulpit" stems from President Theodore Roosevelt's reference to the White House as a "bully pulpit," meaning a terrific platform from which to persuasively advocate an agenda. Roosevelt often used the word "bully" as an adjective meaning superb/wonderful. The Bully Pulpit features news, reasoned discourse, opinion and some humor.

Stokes asks health director to come back

What kind of people do we have on the Stokes Health Board when they conduct a blatant illegal meeting... I would say the majority of the health board should be removed by the commissioners due to their lack of common sense... Just my opinion. :-)

From the Winston-Salem Journal:

DANBURY - The Stokes County Board of Health has asked Don Moore to return as the county's health director after determining that the meeting at which he was fired was conducted in violation of the state's open-meetings law.

The board voted Aug. 3 to fire Moore, but the meeting was not recorded and no minutes were taken, said Commissioner Sandy McHugh, who also serves on the health board.

At a special meeting Thursday, the board reconsidered its action after asking for an opinion from the Institute of Government at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Joseph Ferrell, a professor of public law and government at UNC Chapel Hill, said that no actions taken at the meeting were legal.

Moore said yesterday that he planned to return to his job next week.
