Actually, I don't have much compassion for able-bodied adults who choose to live in poverty. I do have compassion for the kids, the disabled, and the elderly, but not able-bodied adults.

Who is the "common man"??? The reason I ask is that in states and areas where one assumes is where the "common man" lives, they vote Republican (the South, the Midwest, and the suburbs.) The Democrats pretty much are only getting voters who are dependent on government (inner cities, state capitals where government employees live, etc.)
"I believe it is important to provide government-sponsored support systems to those in need. This can be temporary, like FEMA or it can be longer term, like Welfare and Unemployment. In a perfect world, these would be temporary but that isn't always the case."
Why can't it be temporary??? Do we subsidize an able-bodied adult to be dependent on government for the rest of their life???
"Call me a socialist. That is exactly what I am and I'm proud of it!"
Yes, you are a socialist, and that's why we luv you. :-)
