Bully Pulpit

The term "bully pulpit" stems from President Theodore Roosevelt's reference to the White House as a "bully pulpit," meaning a terrific platform from which to persuasively advocate an agenda. Roosevelt often used the word "bully" as an adjective meaning superb/wonderful. The Bully Pulpit features news, reasoned discourse, opinion and some humor.

YOU have no clue...

"Thousands of people hadn't the wherewithal to get up off their butts and leave the city, they sat around and waited for the government to do something for them."

I can not believe that you would make such a statement.

Do you realize that the majority of people who stayed in New Orleans had no way out AND no where to go? They didn't have cars and relied on public transportation to get around the city. Do you really think the city buses were taking folks far enough out of town to escape this storm? We're talking about people who have nothing! No bank accounts, no savings, no retirement, living from paycheck to paycheck. We're talking about people who had no other family to turn to. All they had was the shotgun shack they lived in and the city they loved. When your home is all you've got to your name, it's damn hard to leave it!

It's one thing to decide to "ride out the storm" at your vacation home because you think it's an adventure. It's entirely different when you have no where to turn. How you can even insinuate that they've done anything wrong is beyond me. When we can help the poorest of the poor all over the world, but can't even save our own people, something has gone terribly, terribly wrong.

Why wasn't there food waiting for these people at the Superdome and the convention center? Why weren't the National Guard sent down there immediately?! Bush is lying to us all when he states that no one had predicted the breach in the levees. It had been discussed on all the news channels; radio and tv. The path of this storm had been mapped and the doomsday scenerio of Lake Ponchatrain flooding was a likelihood. The breaks just happen to be in the sections of the levee that hadn't been repaired yet because it wasn't in the budget.

I only pray that this event is opening the eyes of blind Americans who deny the poverty in this country. And the divide between the haves and have-nots grows deeper by the day.
