Bully Pulpit

The term "bully pulpit" stems from President Theodore Roosevelt's reference to the White House as a "bully pulpit," meaning a terrific platform from which to persuasively advocate an agenda. Roosevelt often used the word "bully" as an adjective meaning superb/wonderful. The Bully Pulpit features news, reasoned discourse, opinion and some humor.

State’s Lottery Bill Was A Mistake

No one in high places should be surprised at the controversy unfolding in the effort to establish a state lottery in North Carolina. Except for a few bad apples now and then, we’ve run a pretty tight ship over the years and have managed to avoid major scandals that seem to plague other areas of the country where corruption is so common that it has become expected. It is good that we’re shocked and disappointed by the shenanigans so far revealed in the events leading up to the enactment of the lottery law.
