Bush: 'Fool,' yes, 'Well-Meaning,' not quite
Steve replied: I think you missed Steyn's point, and, therefore, where he made his mistake in his central thesis... If you wanted to hit Steyn up on the weak point of his thesis, you should have pointed out the gigantic leap he made from a well-reasoned argument about events of the last 1500 years to accolades for Bush's bravery in trying to fix the mess. In fact, Bush is no more than yet another well-meaning fool who is tinkering in the geo-political soup once again. Our grandchildren will pay for his mistakes.
And tinkering in the geo-political soup has a whole lot to do with the mistakes involved in past instances of European Imperialism — those same mistakes that erroneously divided tribes and groups, shaking regions such as the Middle East into continual states of war.
No, I read Steyn's mistake but in addition to that, he conveniently ignores the fact that imperialism isn't exactly great for anybody except the imperialists. European Imperialism benefited me, you, and Steyn — making it great for those of European descent — not necessarily for everybody else. And now here goes 'ol Dubya — with Steyn and others like him singing his praises — and he thinks he's going to build a self-sufficient democracy in the midst of a such a region and it's going to work? Or does he really even think that at all? Does Bush and Co. have another motivation other than 'freeing the Iraqi people'? Any guesses?
