Bully Pulpit

The term "bully pulpit" stems from President Theodore Roosevelt's reference to the White House as a "bully pulpit," meaning a terrific platform from which to persuasively advocate an agenda. Roosevelt often used the word "bully" as an adjective meaning superb/wonderful. The Bully Pulpit features news, reasoned discourse, opinion and some humor.

RE: Letters to the Editor

I'm constantly amazed that there are so many communists living in Stokes County. I have to assume Jerry Mitchell is a communist because the alternative is that he is an idiot who can't tell the difference between business and government.

The County Health Department has no business dispensing primary or emergency medical care. Its function should be limited to sanitation inspections, disease advisories, and in extreme cases, providing vaccinations against highly infectious diseases. The latter should be only a stop-gap measure until private practitioners can stock up.

I'm glad to see that at least three of our commissioners can tell the difference.
