Bully Pulpit

The term "bully pulpit" stems from President Theodore Roosevelt's reference to the White House as a "bully pulpit," meaning a terrific platform from which to persuasively advocate an agenda. Roosevelt often used the word "bully" as an adjective meaning superb/wonderful. The Bully Pulpit features news, reasoned discourse, opinion and some humor.

What the...???

I just got a post card from Greg Pratt, who is running for Stokes County Sheriff in the GOP primary.

This thing has got to be some kind of joke.

On one side, it has a picture of Pratt sporting a creepy-looking grin that resembles a grimace. Next to him, there is a little girl of about five who looks absolutely terrified. In front of them is a German Shepherd with a gaping maw that looks as if he is about to lunge at the photographer and tear his throat out.

On the other side is the following:

$339,278.00
STOKES COUNTY RESIDENTS
WHERE IS THE MONEY GOING?????
Did you know that the Stokes County Sheriff's Office
accepted $339,278.00 that was not requested
from the County over the past 2 years?
What did they do with the money?
If they needed it, why didn't they request it to begin with?
(See for yourself: Ask the County for a copy of the 2005-2006 Budget)

Sheesh!

I can think of no less than half a dozen perfectly legitimate reasons why the Sheriff's Department would receive money that it didn't ask for in the budget. Short of some kind of malfeasance in the County Manager's office, I can't think of a single illegitimate reason.

And for Pratt to be questioning anything about the legitimacy of anyone's financial dealings with taxpayer's money is a big old rock he doesn't want to be throwing from his glass house.

The really unfortunate thing about this is that he'll garner more than a few votes off this cheap foolishness. Isn't politics wonderful?
