Laura Bush: Don't focus on gay marriage in campaigns

From the AP:

WASHINGTON — Some election-year advice to Republicans from a high-ranking source who has the president's ear: Don't use a proposed constitutional amendment against gay marriage as a campaign tool.
Just who is that political strategist? Laura Bush.

But wait: how will Republicans rally their red state base without manipulating the fears of homophobes? I'm afraid that the abortion issue alone can't possibly get them all to the polls.
