Bully Pulpit

The term "bully pulpit" stems from President Theodore Roosevelt's reference to the White House as a "bully pulpit," meaning a terrific platform from which to persuasively advocate an agenda. Roosevelt often used the word "bully" as an adjective meaning superb/wonderful. The Bully Pulpit features news, reasoned discourse, opinion and some humor.

Stokes Results: Joyce wins for Sheriff, both incumbents on Board of Commissioners lose re-election

Winston-Salem Journal

DANBURY -
Longtime incumbent Mike Joyce staved off two challengers yesterday in the Republican primary for the Stokes County Sheriff.

In complete but unofficial results, Joyce received 2,875 votes with Greg Pratt and Carole T. Elliott trailing with 380 votes and 118 votes respectively.

...In the race for three seats on the Stokes County Board of Commissioners, two incumbent Republicans, Joe Turpin and John Turpin, lost in the primary election yesterday to three challengers.

In complete but unofficial results, Ernest Lankford, Mike Culler and Ron Carroll won the Republican primary election with 2,324 votes, 2,225 votes, and 2,139 votes respectively. Trailing behind them were incumbents Joe Turpin with 1,172 votes and John Turpin with 1,134 votes.
First off, congrats to the sheriff for winning the GOP primary.

With regard to the commissioners race, as a conservative Republican, I'm disappointed that the Turpin brothers got beat. They have served this county well over the past four years... They are in a select group of public servants that actually do what they said they were going to do when they first ran for office in '04. Reagan would be proud of them...
