Hugh Morton, R.I.P.

GRANDFATHER MOUNTAIN - Hugh Morton, who preserved Grandfather Mountain and captured iconic North Carolina images in thousands of photographs, died about 6 p.m. yesterday, his daughter Catherine Morton said.

Just before Christmas, Morton, 85, had been found to have esophageal cancer. His wife, Julia, was with him when he died at his Linville home beside Grandfather Lake at the base of the mountain.
