RE: Long Ago, in a Galaxy Far, Far Away...
Steve asks: "What color is the sky on the planet where you live?"
The last time I checked it was Carolina blue...
"Then apparently you weren't paying attention to the whole swiftboat mess during the 2004 elections."
When did the White House and the GOP-controlled Congress try to use the power of the government to stop the Swift Boat Vets???
"But I have to ask, is it okay as long as the Republicans are only trying to but liberal talk radio out of business?"
When are Republicans trying to put liberal talk radio out of business??? Liberal talk radio is going out of business because of the free market, not because of anything Republicans are doing on Capitol Hill.
"I don't like MoveOn.org any better than you do, but every aspect of campaign finance and campaign speech limitations fronted by the GOP has been directly aimed at shutting them up."
Organizations like MoveOn.org and other 527 groups have thrived under the McCain-Feingold bill because they are allowed to spend whatever they like.
"When did it become all right for Republicans to try to limit political speech from anyone or anywhere?"
It's not alright for anybody to try to limit political speech, and I believe the majority of the GOP are not in favor of limiting political speech.
"Really? You must have missed John McCain and Lindsay Graham both holding forth on that very topic recently. And before you dismiss either of them, recent history very strongly suggests that they can and do speak for the GOP on a regular basis."
That's because McCain & Graham are media hoars. The media loves them because McCain & Graham go against conservative Republicans. Remember, the media's favorite Republicans are the ones who are moderate to liberal.
"Apparently they didn't feel strongly enough about it to break ranks. Party before principle and all that, eh? In any case, while it might have been Republicans who fought it, it wasn't the GOP that fought it. The Republican Party's official stance is to support limitations on free speech during election campaigns."
"Numerically impossible, especially in the House. Face it, Republicans supported McCain's incumbent reelection protection act right down the line. The GOP you thought you were a part of doesn't exist any more, Andy."
According to the final vote in the House for the McCain-Feingold bill, 240 voted YES (41 GOP, 198 Democrats, and 1 Independent) and 189 voted NO (176 GOP, 12 Democrats, and 1 Independent.) An overwhelming majority of the GOP in the House voted against the bill... In the Senate, 60 voted YES (11 GOP, 48 Democrats, 1 Independent) and 40 voted NO (38 GOP, 2 Democrats.) So the answer to your question is NO, the Republicans didn't support McCain's "incumbent re-election protection act" right down the line.
