Bully Pulpit

The term "bully pulpit" stems from President Theodore Roosevelt's reference to the White House as a "bully pulpit," meaning a terrific platform from which to persuasively advocate an agenda. Roosevelt often used the word "bully" as an adjective meaning superb/wonderful. The Bully Pulpit features news, reasoned discourse, opinion and some humor.

Burr-for-VP talk may be just for show, but still ...

McCain-Burr '08? Could John McCain - the Arizona senator considered the top dog among Republicans gearing up for a run for the White House in 2008 - really be considering our own U.S. Sen. Richard Burr as a potential running mate?

A lot of people (OK, a handful of political addicts begging for a fix) latched onto the talking-head speculation on MSNBC's Hardball program in October. It was interesting to hear McCain toss out Burr's name as a potential running mate in a list of other potentials.

"(Lindsey) Graham, (John) Sununu, (John) Thune, Burr - there's a broad variety of them, both in and out," McCain said, listing Burr along with senators from South Carolina, New Hampshire and South Dakota.

The McCain-Burr rumor grew a little bigger and way more interesting over the weekend, when McCain stopped in Friday night at Burr's 51st birthday party here in Camel City.

"Sen. Burr invited Sen. McCain to the event back in October," said Mike Fenley, the finance director for the Burr's campaign committee. "He came. As far as the vice-president talk, you have to ask Sen. McCain."

Still, it's got to be kind of cool for a freshman senator to have his name bandied about in talk about the big show, right?

"We don't mind," Fenley said.

That would be a balanced ticket, one liberal and one conservative.
