Easley to stay out of speaker race, will not run for office

He seems to be open to role with Democratic president

RALEIGH

In a year-end interview yesterday, Gov. Mike Easley spent a lot of time talking about things he will not do.

He will not get involved in the race for speaker of the N.C. House, he said.

He will not discuss the scandals surrounding the current speaker, Jim Black, while criminal investigations are under way.

And when his second term as governor ends in 2008, he will not run for another office.
