Bully Pulpit

The term "bully pulpit" stems from President Theodore Roosevelt's reference to the White House as a "bully pulpit," meaning a terrific platform from which to persuasively advocate an agenda. Roosevelt often used the word "bully" as an adjective meaning superb/wonderful. The Bully Pulpit features news, reasoned discourse, opinion and some humor.

RE: Carter: Speaking frankly about Israel and Palestine

Andy has already done a good job of rebutting Carter point-by-point, so I won't pile on. I wanted to add a couple of comments, though.

The tone of what Carter wrote is understandably defensive, but the undertone is intended to play to the worst conspiracy theories of anti-Semitic elements: "The Joos control Congress," "The Joos control the media," "The Joos control the colleges," "The Joos all work together to kill free speech." I think even Carter realized that undertone was pervasive since he added this tidbit:

I have been most encouraged by prominent Jewish citizens and members of Congress who have thanked me privately for presenting the facts and some new ideas.

Privately, eh, Jimmy? That's pretty handy. How about some names, Jimmy?
