Bully Pulpit

The term "bully pulpit" stems from President Theodore Roosevelt's reference to the White House as a "bully pulpit," meaning a terrific platform from which to persuasively advocate an agenda. Roosevelt often used the word "bully" as an adjective meaning superb/wonderful. The Bully Pulpit features news, reasoned discourse, opinion and some humor.

Six being considered for Stokes school board

DANBURY

The Stokes County Board of Education chose six candidates during its regular meeting Tuesday to interview for an open seat on the board.

The seat became available in November when Ernest Lankford was elected to the Stokes County Board of Commissioners. The board got 14 letters of interest for the seat in December.

Sonya Cox, the chairwoman of the board, said that the consensus of the board was to make the selection as quickly as possible.

"As quickly as we can get the full board seated, we can get into some strategic planning sessions," Cox said. "We're kind of at a standstill, and the new members are chomping at the bit to do something."

The board hopes to have the position filled by February, said Steve Shelton, the vice chairman of the board. The six candidates - Lauri Cox, Thomas Grubbs, Janet Hall, Colon Moore, Yvonne Rutledge and Zollie Smith - will be interviewed during the Jan. 22 meeting of the school board.

The appointed candidate will serve on the board until the next election for board members.
