Cigarette tax rise approved in Senate
Panel will negotiate amount; money to go for children's health
WASHINGTON (Winston-Salem Journal) - The Senate voted 68-31 last night to increase the federal tax on cigarettes by 61 cents, which would raise the tax on a pack of a cigarettes to $1.
The vote came a day after the House passed a similar bill to increase the tobacco tax by 45 cents, making it 89 cents a pack.
The exact amount of the increase will have to be negotiated in a conference committee before the final legislation passes, but both votes show political willingness to support a significant increase in taxes on cigarettes to pay for expanding health-care coverage for children.
