Teen trades hacked iPhone for new car
SAN FRANCISCO (Yahoo News) - The teenage hacker who managed to unlock the iPhone so that it can be used with cellular networks other than AT&T will be trading his reworked gadget for a new car.
George Hotz, of Glen Rock, N.J., said he had reached the deal with CertiCell, a Louisville, Ky.-based mobile phone repair company.
Hotz posted on his blog that he traded his modified iPhone for "a sweet Nissan 350Z and 3 8GB iPhones."

I have been laughing my butt off about this ever since I first read it.
First of all, the fact that the kid had to make hardware modifications to unlock the phone is just hilarious. Typically, the media thinks he's a genius. I think autistic might be a better term. Talk about going around your butt to get to your elbow!
Second, and this is probably media hype as well, it is a far cry from unlocking an iPhone to actually hacking one. I haven't read all the details of what he did, but just unlocking the phone will let you make a call from T-Mobile's network, but not much else. If the carrier you're trying to roam on doesn't have data agreements with AT&T, you're no better off than when the phone was locked.
And finally, it's not like T-Mobile is going to write you a contract for an iPhone.
Nothing to see here. Move along.
