Bully Pulpit

The term "bully pulpit" stems from President Theodore Roosevelt's reference to the White House as a "bully pulpit," meaning a terrific platform from which to persuasively advocate an agenda. Roosevelt often used the word "bully" as an adjective meaning superb/wonderful. The Bully Pulpit features news, reasoned discourse, opinion and some humor.

Walnut Cove Town Council Takes on Street Preaching

WALNUT COVE, N.C. (WGHP) – Despite heated opposition, the Walnut Cove Town Council approved an amended gathering ordinance Tuesday night. The ordinance requires any group of five or more people to apply for a permit before meeting in public. Many at the meeting claim the ordinance conflicts with the U.S. Constitution's right to free speech.

Of course, those many are a bunch of idiots. The Town of Walnut Cove is not beholden to the First Amendment since it is not the United States government. As usual, I blame public education. There was probably not a single soul there who could even tell you what federalism is, let alone how it affects local governments.

Stupid stupid stupid.

Steve, Correct me if I am wrong. We have a member of the board of commissioners in WC that should not be on the board. She owns a home in WC but does not live in the house and never has. She has gotten her drivers license with this address, has a vehicle for this address and is registered to vote in the town, and lives in the county near Belews Creek Steam Station. From what I can gather from the General Statues regarding Elections she is a felon for Lying to get on the ballot and to vote in town. She is what is causing all the Controversy in Town. Board of Elections is ready to investigate if somebody will go file the paperwork, but until then we are stuck with someone imposing their will on a town she doesn't even live in. I think that after last night somebody that lives in town might go file the paperwork. It does have to be a Registered Voter that LIVES in town that files the complaint. Fron what I have been able to see on Saturdays the people on the street that are preaching are not bothering anybody, and I have been through town every Saturday.

For whatever reason, small towns just seem to attract more than their share of petty fascists. This person sounds like she has nothing better to do than order everyone else's lives for them. She's dangerous.

That being said, I find the claim that the BoE refuses to investigate this without some bureaucratic "paperwork" step being performed to be more than a little questionable. Either the board doesn't want to investigate it, in which case everyone on it should be removed, or there is some sort of stall tactic going on.

Maybe some enterprising soul should bring this to the attention of WGHP. I'm sure they are more than capable of making a mountain out of a mole hill. Perhaps that talent should be employed for a worthwhile purpose like this. Nothing makes bureaucrats and petty tyrants scramble for cover like a little exposure.
