Bully Pulpit

The term "bully pulpit" stems from President Theodore Roosevelt's reference to the White House as a "bully pulpit," meaning a terrific platform from which to persuasively advocate an agenda. Roosevelt often used the word "bully" as an adjective meaning superb/wonderful. The Bully Pulpit features news, reasoned discourse, opinion and some humor.

Clinton Says No to Licenses for Illegals

WASHINGTON (AP) - Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton on Wednesday came out against granting driver's licenses to illegal immigrants, after weeks of pressure in the presidential race to take a position on a now-failed ID plan from her home state governor.

Clinton has faced criticism from candidates in both parties for her noncommittal answers on New York Gov. Eliot Spitzer's attempt to allow illegal immigrants in his state to receive driver's licenses. Spitzer abandoned the effort Wednesday.

"I support Governor Spitzer's decision today to withdraw his proposal," Clinton said in a statement. "As president, I will not support driver's licenses for undocumented people and will press for comprehensive immigration reform that deals with all of the issues around illegal immigration including border security and fixing our broken system."

The day after the last Democrat debate, Hillary said she supported Spitzer's plan. Today, she gives the impression she's been strongly against it all along. It's hard to believe there's a good chance she will be the next president of the United States. She should be down there in the polls battling Dennis Kucinich for the tin-foil hat club vote. :-)

You could have written the same comment about George Bush. I seem to remember him being pretty adamantly opposed to using US troops for nation building. I guess he was just adamantly opposed to Bill Clinton using them for that.

I can't believe any of them, with the possible exception of Ron Paul, might be our next president.

Why did New York Gov. Eliot Spitzer drop his plan to offer driver's licenses to illegal immigrants?

Fred Dicker, longtime reporter on state government for the New York Post, says her people sent the message to him to drop it.

Dicker said this on Hardball, courtesy the folks at Newsbusters:

"I was told at a very high level in New York politics that Mrs. Clinton's campaign, or some of her top people, signaled to Governor Spitzer's people that he had damaged her, they were wondering what the heck he was up to, why he had brought it to the floor now. And made it clear that the governor was hurting her and that he ought to back down if he wanted to help her, which he says he wants to do."

Dicker, asked if his source is in Spitzer's office, describes his source as being "In his camp, not his office. But at the highest levels... First of all, Spitzer's a very smart guy and he's aware of what happened. But secondly, they travel in similar circles. High-level consultants talk with one other. The governor's political consultants and advisers were advised of the damage done here, that's how it was relayed."
