Bully Pulpit

The term "bully pulpit" stems from President Theodore Roosevelt's reference to the White House as a "bully pulpit," meaning a terrific platform from which to persuasively advocate an agenda. Roosevelt often used the word "bully" as an adjective meaning superb/wonderful. The Bully Pulpit features news, reasoned discourse, opinion and some humor.

Laura Ingraham Rips Robertson for Giuliani Endorsement

From Jim Geraghty of National Review Online:

Wow. One of the campaigns that probably would have liked to have gotten Pat Robertson's endorsement - who am I kidding? All of them would have liked to have had it - circulates this scathing comment from Laura Ingraham, reacting to Robertson's endorsement of Giuliani...

After the news conference announcing the Pat Robertson endorsement yesterday, I sat down with Rudy Giuliani to discuss the foundation of Giuliani's appeal to social conservatives: his pledge to appoint strict conservatives to the federal courts. The problem, I said, is that some conservatives just don't believe him:

"I don't understand why," Giuliani told me. "Because look, if I was going to try to fool them, I would just change my positions. I would just fool them, right? I'm not suggesting anybody else has done that. So I think people should have the sense that I'm straight with them. And if they just look at my history and background, who do they think I'm going to appoint? All of my friends, all of the people I've associated with, all the people I respect, the vast majority of them would fall into the category of conservative thinkers, conservative lawyers, and strict constructionist judges."

Giuliani also talked at some length about his strategy for the upcoming Republican primaries and caucuses, and I'll have that story tomorrow.

Just back from being with some committed conservatives, veterans all when it comes to ideological battles. The consensus was that Pat Robertson's endorsement helps Rudy — not because he commands the allegiance of the "easily led" but because it provides a significant "Exhibit A" rejoinder to the charge that Christian conservatives simply won't support Giuliani. One expert on gun issues faults the whole GOP field, pointing out that Giuliani was the only Republican mayor to sue gun manufacturers. I think he shows a lack of understanding here. If you treated your wife the way Giuliani treated his, would you support guns in the home?

The consensus candidate was Mitt Romney. One apparent effect of the Robertson endorsement is to persuade sideline-sitting conservatives who strongly oppose Giuliani to get behind someone who can stop him.

I call BS. Most Christian conservatives I know wouldn't pee on Pat Robertson if he was on fire, let alone listen to him unquestioningly. The only things the endorsement shows are that Robertson is exactly as hypocritical as everyone thought he was, and that he is just as cheap.
