Bully Pulpit

The term "bully pulpit" stems from President Theodore Roosevelt's reference to the White House as a "bully pulpit," meaning a terrific platform from which to persuasively advocate an agenda. Roosevelt often used the word "bully" as an adjective meaning superb/wonderful. The Bully Pulpit features news, reasoned discourse, opinion and some humor.

Filing to open soon for several local races

(The Stokes News) - The presidential, U.S. Congress and U.S. Senate races will not be the only things on the 2008 ballot in November. Locally, several seats are up for grabs as well.

On Feb. 11, filing will open at noon for candidates seeking the seats of Stokes County Register of Deeds, Stokes County commissioner, State House and State Senate. Those who want to file for any of those races will have until noon on Feb. 29 to do so.

This year, Republican Commissioners Leon Inman and Jimmy Walker will be up for election, as will Register of Deeds Kathy Young. Also having seats up for election are Republican Rep. Bryan Holloway for the 91st State House of Representatives and Republican Sen. Don East for the 30th State Senate district.
