Bully Pulpit

The term "bully pulpit" stems from President Theodore Roosevelt's reference to the White House as a "bully pulpit," meaning a terrific platform from which to persuasively advocate an agenda. Roosevelt often used the word "bully" as an adjective meaning superb/wonderful. The Bully Pulpit features news, reasoned discourse, opinion and some humor.

Police chief fired in Walnut Cove

WALNUT COVE (Winston-Salem Journal) - Walnut Cove has fired its police chief.

Barry Conaway had been with the Walnut Cove Police Department for 17 years. Town Manager Homer Dearmin declined to discuss the firing because it was a personnel matter.

James Hill was named acting chief in Walnut Cover. Hill was formerly a sergeant with the police department.

I THINK BARRY CONAWAY HAS BEEN DONE WRONG, AND SHOULD HAVE HIS JOB RETURNED TO HIM. IN TALKING TO THE PEOPLE OF WALNUT COVE - I HAVE FOUND EVERYONE FEELS THE SAME AND THE TOWN BENEFITS FROM WHAT HE HAS TO OFFER. WE STAND BEHIND HIM AND WITH HIM.

Hmmm. All caps posted by good old Anonymous. Now there's an opinion that merits our attention...not.

I suspect once Anonymous finds out why Conaway was fired, his/her sympathy will probably be somewhat dampened. Then again, maybe not. I discovered long ago that people believe what makes them feel better about themselves. The truth usually ends up in the back seat.

A lot of people in Walnut Cove have had their blinders on for a long time. They see nothing, hear nothing and smell nothing. They really need to take time to make it a point to know what is going on. The wool has been pulled over a lot people's eyes for a long time and it is time somebody got out the clippers and sheared the wool. I just hate it had to be the Town Manager that just got hired last Wed. Night, but glad somebody finally had what it took to take care of what should have been done in the early 90's. Just think he would probably have run again for Sheriff (or I should say his wife would have run for him like she did last time).
Now if we could just get rid of the Commissioner that ran and won that doesn't live in the Town she makes decision's for. Come on folks somebody from Walnut Cove take an interest in where you live. When it comes time to vote next time make sure all commissioners reside in the Town Limits.

Change is hard. It is human nature to reject opinions and situations which challenge our comfort zones. Such a time is afoot in the small rural community of Walnut Cove (lovingly called The WC by the younger generation.)

It is easy to sit back and point fingers and substitute our uncertainty with anger for the Town Manager. However, it takes vast amounts of courage to pause, step back and really look at the situation, look at the history and have faith that our elected officials and Mr. Dearmin just might know more details about the situation than we do.

In time, the majority of the details will leak out. Some will change their minds and some will never open themselves to anything but blind anger. For those, we should feel sorry, but only briefly - the rest of us are moving onward to a brighter future in The WC; a future whose time has come.

The folks posting here are exactly right. Barry Conaway is not what he seems. The phrase that comes to mind is "Absolute power corrupts absolutely". I have known Barry for a long time, and I have known Mr. Dearmin for not quite as long, but long enough to be willing to bet he thought the decision through, and had a reason to do what he did. Walnut Cove is moving forward under a new Mayor who seems progressive, energetic, and willing to cast aside political alliances and nepotism, and a Board whose actions so far indicate that that they are committed to making Walnut Cove a better place to live and have the citizens' best interests in mind. Kudos to Mr. Dearmin and Walnut Cove's elected officials for making a tough decision and moving the town forward!

I am a former police chief in the small town of Jonesville, NC. I knew Barry thru business but thats all. One of my former employees works for Walnut Cove. He always spoke highly of Barry. I haven't
heard amy rumors of amything but I'm sure its as simple as the motto "Ya can't please everybody". The whole thing is probably just small town politics.

YEA, I know there are two sides to every story - "always is" But the problem is - no one knows why this man lost his job. If you know why, then please by all means tell the story. "we are waiting"

Is Mr.Dearmin going to do anything about our commissioner that does NOT live in our town????
How can she do a decent job when she don't care enough about Walnut Cove to live here.
ALL officials should be required to live in the town they try to controll.
