Bully Pulpit

The term "bully pulpit" stems from President Theodore Roosevelt's reference to the White House as a "bully pulpit," meaning a terrific platform from which to persuasively advocate an agenda. Roosevelt often used the word "bully" as an adjective meaning superb/wonderful. The Bully Pulpit features news, reasoned discourse, opinion and some humor.

Candidates in Northwest N.C. file to run in elections this fall

(Winston-Salem Journal) - Voters in the Fifth Congressional District are assured of a choice this fall as incumbent Rep. Virginia Foxx, a Republican, and one Democratic challenger, Roy Carter, announced their filings for the office yesterday.

Carter, a retired teacher and coach, made his announcement at the Ashe County Board of Elections in Jefferson. But Democrats may have a choice in the primary: Diane Hamby, a former member of the Iredell County Board of Commissioners, said last month that she would run for the Democratic nomination, although she did not file yesterday.

Following are filings from around Northwest North Carolina:

Stokes County
- Bryan Holloway, a Republican incumbent, filed to run again for the 91st N.C. House District.

- Ronda Jones of Danbury, a Republican, filed to run for one of two seats on the Stokes County Board of Commissioners.

- Kathy Young of Danbury, a Republican, filed to run for re-election as register of deeds.

Surry County
- Don East of Pilot Mountain, a Republican, filed to run for re-election to the 30th N.C. Senate District. East will be trying for his sixth term.

- Mark Badgett of Pinnacle filed to run as district court judge for District 17B, serving Surry and Stokes counties.

Wow! I may actually have four Republicans' signs in my yard for the primary.

Ron Paul, Don East, Virginia Foxx (if she has a primary), and Mark Badgett.

Quick someone find me a Democrat who doesn't make me nauseous. I wonder who is running against Bryan Holloway?

Actually, if Kathy Young has a primary, I guess I'll have five GOP signs. I can't imagine why she would, though.
