Mount Airy company cuts 149 workers

MOUNT AIRY (Winston-Salem Journal) - Perry Manufacturing announced yesterday it would lay off 149 workers at its service-and- support operation in Mount Airy, city officials said.

The workers will lose their jobs by April 7, leaving 25 to 30 people at the company, said Mayor Jack Loftis.

“It will have an impact on our local economy,” he said. “As the employees involved go through the transition, it’s certainly difficult for them and their families.”

Perry Manufacturing has not made socks here for about five years, said Loftis, who is retired from the company. The company has plants in Honduras.
