NTSB: Pilot crashed while attempting an aerobatic maneuver

ELKIN (Winston-Salem Journal) - Investigators with the National Transportation Safety Board were back out at the Elkin Airport this morning to examine the wreckage of an experimental home-built aircraft that crashed Sunday afternoon.

They said that the pilot was attempting a maneuver known as "aileron roll" and at one point was flying about eight feet above the runway before he lost control of the airplane and crashed to the west of the runway.

Investigators said they would remove the wreckage today and will keep the engine for examination. Lawrence Darrell Proctor, of Greensboro, died at the scene Sunday.
