Bully Pulpit

The term "bully pulpit" stems from President Theodore Roosevelt's reference to the White House as a "bully pulpit," meaning a terrific platform from which to persuasively advocate an agenda. Roosevelt often used the word "bully" as an adjective meaning superb/wonderful. The Bully Pulpit features news, reasoned discourse, opinion and some humor.

Seen recently on a "conservative" forum...

I’m still not convinced McCain would be much worse than Bush has been.

One thing that Democrats seem to be able to understand better than Republicans is that if you lie down with dogs, you will get up with fleas. You simply don’t hear them whining about how they were fooled into voting for the devil.

Multiple loud and clear warnings came out of Texas in 2000 and before. They were the same kinds of things we hear about Huckabee. Texas Republicans warned that Bush was a toadie of the public schools through his wife. They warned that he supported open borders to ensure a steady stream of cooks and maids for his pals. They warned of his tendency to give important positions to incompetent friends. Most of all, they warned that his views on government largesse and redistributionism were well to the left of center. None of that mattered. Pubbies were scared spitless of Algore.

What simply boggles my mind is that there are so many completely witless droids out there who are going to make the same mistake all over again. Even worse, the evidence against McCain is stronger, longer, and far more obvious. Every Republican who hasn’t been buried in a coal cellar has seen McCain’s Dr. Hyde at one time or another during the last 8 years. Yet, against all reason and sanity, I read people up and down the spectrum of influence preaching on McCain’s journey to Damascus. Even more stupefying is the assertion that somehow, Congressional Republicans and the “conservative” press will keep him in line. How many times do you have to slam your thumb with that hammer before you stop swinging it?

Fine. Peachy. As many have attempted to point out, very astutely, we (because I voted for the shrub in 2000) screwed up and bought the lie. Only this time, those of you who blindly walk into the jaws of the shark need to realize that you are utterly and completely demolishing the minuscule remaining shreds of the GOP’s credibility, and you are burying conservatism for at least a generation, maybe two. I hope it’s worth it to you.

One last time, for those who have been sound asleep for the last eight years: McCain can and will be worse than Hillary or Obama and much worse than Bush. Hillary or Obama, the former moreso than the latter, will push the Congressional Republicans and the rightward media hard right. They will return to the obstructionist tactic that worked so well for them in the 1970s and after 1994. With McCain in the Oval Office, said pubbie apologists will shield and rationalize McCain’s worst excesses. True and literal fascism will arrive in America.

And for the umpty-eleventh time, get this through your heads: supporting the lesser of two evils is still supporting evil.
