Bully Pulpit

The term "bully pulpit" stems from President Theodore Roosevelt's reference to the White House as a "bully pulpit," meaning a terrific platform from which to persuasively advocate an agenda. Roosevelt often used the word "bully" as an adjective meaning superb/wonderful. The Bully Pulpit features news, reasoned discourse, opinion and some humor.

Walnut Cove officials back manager's firing of police chief

Barry Conaway considers suing town, attorney says

(Winston-Salem Journal) -
Barry Conaway, the former police chief of Walnut Cove, isn’t getting his job back.

After reviewing a grievance filed by Conaway, town officials said yesterday that they are upholding the decision by Town Manager Homer Dearmin to fire him. Conaway was the town’s police chief for about 15 years.

Dearmin met in closed session with the town board on Feb. 6 about Conaway’s firing and then met with the town attorney and Conaway and his attorney on Feb. 7.

Conaway is like the dog that chases the car, but isn't even thinking about what he'll do if he catches it. Even if he manages to get his job back, he will be walking on razors for whatever short tenure he manages to accomplish. Walnut Cove's officials will be looking for the slightest reason to can him. I know I would be.

I suspect the whole thing is purely ego-driven. Conaway probably wants the job back long enough to poke his fingers in the town's eyes, and then he'll walk under his own terms. The town's leaders are doing the right thing by holding the line. It's refreshing in this day and age to see a group with the backbone to do something like that. It's even more refreshing to see elected officials who have the integrity to stand behind their administrator.
