Duke emission-scrubbers running at Belews Creek
Public can see them this morning and afternoon
(Winston-Salem Journal) - Duke Energy Corp. will present its new emissions-scrubbing equipment today at its Belews Creek power plant, capping a $500 million construction project that began three years ago.
Community leaders and people living near the coal-fired plant in southern Stokes County will get a chance to see the scrubbers this morning and afternoon.
The two scrubbers were brought online last month and are expected to reduce emissions of sulfur dioxide by more than 95 percent. They are part of Duke's efforts to comply with the Clean Smokestacks Act passed by the N.C. General Assembly in 2003. Sulfur dioxide contributes to particle pollution, haze and acid rain.
