Bully Pulpit

The term "bully pulpit" stems from President Theodore Roosevelt's reference to the White House as a "bully pulpit," meaning a terrific platform from which to persuasively advocate an agenda. Roosevelt often used the word "bully" as an adjective meaning superb/wonderful. The Bully Pulpit features news, reasoned discourse, opinion and some humor.

Biden: Low taxes are unpatriotic

(By Ed Morrissey, Hot Air) - While Barack Obama tries to call John McCain a “liar” for saying Obama will raise taxes on a wide swath of Americans, Joe Biden tells America that paying higher taxes is … patriotic? The Democratic VP told Good Morning America today that “it’s time to be patriotic” and start allowing Uncle Sam to take even more of your paycheck:

Democratic vice presidential candidate Joe Biden says that paying higher taxes is the patriotic thing to do for wealthier Americans. …

Biden told ABC’s “Good Morning America” on Thursday that, in his words, “it’s time to be patriotic … time to jump in, time to be part of the deal, time to help get America out of the rut.”

America’s economic woes have nothing to do with taxes. Biden offered a non-sequitur yesterday when asked about the need to bail out AIG, Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, and Bear Stearns. He blamed the problems on tax cuts, which makes no sense at all:

We should try to correct the problems that caused this. And what’s caused this? The profligate tax cuts to the very, very wealthy that John wants to continue. What’s caused this is the failure to have regulation so that, in fact — John talks about these CEOs getting these big bailout packages.

From the American Thinker:

Forget for a moment that the top 5% of of the wealthiest Americans already have done their patriotic duty by paying 80% of the taxes from individuals. Forget also that there are 48 million families who, thanks to Republican tax cuts, pay nothing in taxes at all - zero, nada, zilch.

Believing that paying taxes is "patriotic" is idiocy. Biden and the Democrats are under the mistaken impression that whatever you make belongs to them and they are doing you a favor by letting you keep a certain percentage of it - that it is up to the taxpayer to be "patriotic" and pony up. Never mind cutting spending. Never mind dealing with the coming crisis in out of control entitlements.

Making the payment of taxes a question of patriotic devotion is sickening. Par for the course for Democrats who want us to be more like Sweden.

From National Review Online:

Joe Biden’s comment about raising taxes and patriotism this morning opened the door nice and wide for the McCain campaign.
