McCain's Queen of Hearts Intervention

WASHINGTON - Under the pressure of the financial crisis, one presidential candidate is behaving like a flustered rookie playing in a league too high. It is not Barack Obama.
Channeling his inner Queen of Hearts, John McCain furiously, and apparently without even looking around at facts, said Chris Cox, chairman of the Securities and Exchange Commission, should be decapitated. This childish reflex provoked The Wall Street Journal to editorialize that "McCain untethered" -- disconnected from knowledge and principle -- had made a "false and deeply unfair" attack on Cox that was "unpresidential" and demonstrated that McCain "doesn't understand what's happening on Wall Street any better than Barack Obama does."...
...On "60 Minutes" Sunday evening, McCain, saying "this may sound a little unusual," said that he would like to replace Cox with Andrew Cuomo, the Democratic attorney general of New York who is the son of former Gov. Mario Cuomo. McCain explained that Cuomo has "respect" and "prestige" and could "lend some bipartisanship." Conservatives have been warned.
Conservatives who insist that electing McCain is crucial usually start, and increasingly end, by saying he would make excellent judicial selections. But the more one sees of his impulsive, intensely personal reactions to people and events, the less confidence one has that he would select judges by calm reflection and clear principles, having neither patience nor aptitude for either.
It is arguable that, because of his inexperience, Obama is not ready for the presidency. It is arguable that McCain, because of his boiling moralism and bottomless reservoir of certitudes, is not suited to the presidency. Unreadiness can be corrected, although perhaps at great cost, by experience. Can a dismaying temperament be fixed?
One reason McCain has dropped in the polls is that he's reminding conservatives why they never liked him to begin with. When McCain was rising in the polls, he was able to bring back the Reagan coalition of moderate to conservative Republicans, moderate to conservative Democrats & Libertarians. With McCain's reaction to the Wall Street crisis by blaming Chris Cox and Wall Street, he's now angered conservative Republicans and Libertarians. It's troubling that McCain's first impulse is to turn left. He even adopts the rhetoric of the left. I'm still amazed that he's the GOP nominee.

[The column] Articulates why my vote for McCain has gone something like this:
1. Stay at home – not vote for McCain
2. Post Saddleback debate – vote for McCain
3. Selection of Palin – donate $$ to McCain/Palin
4. McCain’s reaction to Wall St financial crisis, esp criticism of Cox and suggestion of bringing in Andrew Cuomo – see position number 1
If a restaurant you used to love starts slacking, serving you lackluster food, etc., how long do you keep spending your money with them? In other words, if so many "conservative" Republicans truly aren't happy with the McCain choice, then really: why not use this election to send a message? "Give us a conservative choice, or we'll stay home." Maybe next time around, a guy like Ron Paul would have a bit more support from the RNC. While Andy likes to say, "Vote your conscience," I'd like to add a tag to that advice: "Or don't vote at all."
Strother opines: "If a restaurant you used to love starts slacking, serving you lackluster food, etc., how long do you keep spending your money with them?"
Well, if there are only two restaurants left in town, and you really want to go out to dinner, even though your #1 place starts slacking, it's still better than the alternative. At least you know what's on the menu. :-)
At least you know what's on the menu.
But if business falls off (by their customers speaking with their wallet) maybe they'd get the hint to improve the quality, service, and the menu. Why else would they be inclined to make the effort to better serve their customers?
Further, if business for these two 'restaurants' got bad enough, you could count on a new one opening to better serve your needs. Thank God for Capitalism, right? ;)

And you say this as a concerned citizen just looking out for what's best for the Republican Party. Nice try. I'm not staying home on Nov. 4th. :-)
I'm not staying home on Nov. 4th.
I am.
Supporting the lesser of two evils is still supporting evil.
And you say this as a concerned citizen just looking out for what's best for the Republican Party. Nice try.
Of course I'm not looking out for the Republican Party. Why should anyone "look out" for a political party who actively alienates "the base" in order to chase votes? It's not respectable.
Besides, the Republican Party gave you the choice that you actively complain about but are still going to rally behind. You're the unappreciated customer I illustrated above.
I'm not staying home on Nov. 4th.
So you are going to vote for the Turd Sandwich! ;) [See "Giant Douche Vs. Turd Sandwich" on You Tube for more information — Ed.]
You know, if you really cared about the future direction of your favorite political party, maybe you should stay home on Nov. 4. If you help McCain win, they'll just send you more McCains your way because you're buying what they're selling. It could be argued that your vote for McCain helps push folks like Ron Paul out of the party for good.

I can't believe you're encouraging somebody to stay home and not vote... Ha! You vote for Obama; I'll vote for McCain... That way, we will cancel each other out and it will be a wash. :-)

You say that like it's a bad thing. Voting just gives the bastards cover.
Steve opines: Voting just gives the bastards cover.
I did laugh out loud on that one. :-)
Question: Can we write in? Probably not, huh?
Nope, you can't write-in. If you write a name, they will throw your ballot out.
