Bully Pulpit

The term "bully pulpit" stems from President Theodore Roosevelt's reference to the White House as a "bully pulpit," meaning a terrific platform from which to persuasively advocate an agenda. Roosevelt often used the word "bully" as an adjective meaning superb/wonderful. The Bully Pulpit features news, reasoned discourse, opinion and some humor.

Prayer Breakfast

(Winston-Salem Journal) - At prayer breakfasts each week, members of Congress gather to read scripture, share stories, and pray. And they sing hymns -- usually not very well, Rep. Heath Shuler, D-11th, told the crowd at the National Prayer Breakfast in Washington on Thursday.

As co-chairman of the annual breakfast, Shuler introduced President Obama, telling an international audience that his children were moved by Obama's inauguration and said, "Daddy, let's pray for the president."

Before introducing Obama, Shuler introduced Casting Crowns, a Christian rock group whose performance, he said, spared the audience from listening to members of Congress sing. "I think God really appreciates that," Shuler said.
