Soldier from Elkin Killed in Afghanistan

(Fox 8 News) - An Elkin High School graduate was killed Monday while fighting in Afghanistan, the principal of the school told FOX8 News.

Army Capt. Mark Garner graduated from the school in 1997, and according to principal Mark Byrd, Garner's mother teaches biology at the school.

In happier times in December 2008, FOX8 aired a Christmas greeting from Garner and his wife, who were stationed in Germany at the time. In the video, the couple wished their friends and family happy holidays and thanked them for their support.
