Bully Pulpit

One last teaching assignment: Historic school to be burned in training exercise

(By Leslie Bray Evans, The Stokes News) - After 86 years of educating Stokes County students, the historic Nancy Reynolds school will have one last teaching assignment. School officials have decided that rather than demolishing the school, they will burn it, providing area firefighters with a training exercise that will enable them to better learn how to fight fires.

“One last class” is what Stokes County Schools Director of Operations David Burge calls it.

Local fire departments will converge on the Nancy Reynolds site on Tuesday, September 29, to begin preparing the old school for the burn. The actual burning of the building will begin on Friday, October 2 and continue through Saturday, October 3. Fire officials will have until Monday, October 12 to make sure the burning process and aftermath is complete.
