Hike on river tract gives glimpse of group's work

Winter lingers at South Deep Creek at its confluence with the Dan River in Stokes County. Ken Bridle of the Piedmont Land Conservancy works to preserve such tracts.

Winston-Salem Journal: You know it's going to be a fine day for a hike when you spot 12 or so wild turkeys waddling around the base of a hill you are about to climb.

Another sign?

The presence of Ken Bridle, a hiking encyclopedia of geology, wildlife, botany and history.

Bridle is the stewardship director for the Piedmont Land Conservancy, and on Friday mornings he leads hikes on some of the conservancy's protected areas.
