New Analysis Shows Freed Man's DNA at Crime Scene
Abbitt was freed in September 2009
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (WGHP) - New tests have shown that DNA from a man whose rape conviction was overturned last year was actually present at the crime scene, according to the Winston-Salem Journal.
Joseph Lamont Abbitt of Winston-Salem was convicted June 22, 1995, of two counts of first-degree rape, one count of first-degree burglary and two counts of first-degree kidnapping in connection with the May 1991 sexual assaults of a 15-year-old girl and her 13-year-old sister.
Abbitt was freed on Sept. 2, 2009, after DNA testing eliminated him as the offender in the case.
After his release, items from the crime scene were sent off for additional testing in hopes of uncovering a new suspect. Police said Wednesday that Abbitt's DNA was present on a flat sheet from one of the victim's bed.
