Mt. Airy Approves Naming Bridge After Martin Luther King

MOUNT AIRY, NC (WGHP) - The Mount Airy board of commissioners showed unanimous support of a resolution to create the city's first official tribute to Martin Luther King Jr.

The Mount Airy News reported that commissioners voted Thursday night to approve a resolution for NCDOT to name a bridge on Independence Boulevard the Martin Luther King Jr. Bridge. The bridge, located near the Lowes Foods shopping center, is near a historic African-American neighborhood.

Commissioners said they had been working with the local branch of the NAACP since July. In the past, a campaign was launched to name all of Independence Boulevard after King.

The resolution now goes to NCDOT, who has the final say on whether the bridge gets renamed.
