Bully Pulpit

Christian Flag will fly again at Veterans Memorial - City of King holds lottery to determine flags to be flown

(By Leslie Bray, The Stokes News) - The 11th flagpole at the Veterans Memorial in King has been empty since the Christian flag once flying there was removed on Thursday morning, Sept. 16. But as of Monday, Jan. 3, it will be seen fluttering in the wintery breeze once again.

The City of King, in accordance with its newly-adopted limited public forum policy for the Memorial at Central Park, held a lottery on Wednesday, Dec. 22, to determine which flags would fly on the now-empty flagpole throughout 2011. One hundred ten applications were turned in to King City Hall. Each one was assigned a number to have the chance to be one of 52 flags to fly next year—one per week.

The lottery was held at the American Legion in King with many residents and City of King officials present, although the room was far from full compared to previous meetings involving this issue. The entire process took less than an hour on Wednesday afternoon.
