Bully Pulpit

The term "bully pulpit" stems from President Theodore Roosevelt's reference to the White House as a "bully pulpit," meaning a terrific platform from which to persuasively advocate an agenda. Roosevelt often used the word "bully" as an adjective meaning superb/wonderful. The Bully Pulpit features news, reasoned discourse, opinion and some humor.

Video With Dick Cheney Fighting For Breath Leaves Mika Brzezinski Laughing

(By Mark Finkelstein, NewsBusters.org) - Are you old enough to remember the polio-era line: "funny as an iron lung"? After all, what kind of person would find funny the notion of someone fighting to breathe?

Answer: Mika Brzezinski.

Today's 'Morning Joe' played a Letterman clip of a faux-promo for an imaginary TV show called "The Dick Cheney Story." As the title song from the Mary Tyler Moore Show plays merrily in the background, we're treated to images of Cheney wielding a gun, in a wheelchair and undergoing open-heart surgery. The clip closes with video of Cheney fighting to get a breath of air.

Cut to Mika, doubled-over, laughing hysterically, literally to the point of tears.

(Hot Air) - Any hack can use topical material to get a crowd laughing but it takes a craftsman to reduce someone to hysterics with gags that would have felt stale, oh, eight years ago. You’re going to watch this clip and think, “Wait, did I just see … a Halliburton reference?” You sure did, plus the ten millionth goof on Cheney for having shot that guy in the neck via the part where he’s waving around a rifle. They must have some master checklist, last updated in 2006, titled “Funny Things About Dick Cheney” which they call up any time they write bits like this. At the very top of the checklist, apparently: Gravely serious cardiac complications.

I like Mika and she’s usually not a jerk, so I’m going to pretend that she’s convulsing here not over Cheney gasping for air but at either (a) the audacious tastelessness of the gags or (b) the sheer stale hackishness of the bit. 'Pretend with me'.

What part of …

- DAVID LETTERMAN had open heart surgery (a quadruple bypass)
- DAVID LETTERMAN had a brief stint on the Mary Tyler Moore Show

doesn’t anyone understand?

THAT is what Mika was laughing about – as she said, “not about Cheney” – it was about Letterman poking fun at his own life – and it was absolutely brilliant and hysterical (if you understood the background).

Now … knowing that … calm down and have a good laugh today (it’s good for our mental and physical health).
