New Hwy. 52 Layout Could Slow Down EMS Response

(WGHP) - As a Highway 52 upgrade will result in the permanent closure of the 3rd, 4th and 5th street on-ramps, EMS officials are worried that response times will increase.

NCDOT is spending $13 million to retool the intersection of Hwy. 52 and Business 40. The project, which begins in June and is scheduled for completion by November 2012, includes adding lanes to the roadways.

Some 89,000 vehicles pass through the intersection every day, and for years it has seen twice the number of accidents than other similar intersections.
