Video Captures Lightning Striking Plane As It Lands In London

(By Mark Joyella, Mediaite) - Pilots say it happens often–and that aircraft are designed to handle it–but still, seeing lightning strike a plane with 500 passengers aboard is an intense experience. A photographer in London caught the strike, which hit an Emirates Airlines plane as it prepared to land. As ABC News reports, “the flash struck the roof, right above the pilots’ heads but thankfully, planes can handle this and no one was hurt. There wasn’t even a scratch on the plane. The lightning bolt lit up the sky and spidered out around the craft in a spectacular light show.”

And it’s a show worth watching. According to ABC, the last time a commercial aircraft crashed due to lightning was in 1967, when the lightning bolt caused a fuel tank explosion. But other than that, it’s just a lightshow.
