The term "bully pulpit" stems from President Theodore Roosevelt's reference to the White House as a "bully pulpit," meaning a terrific platform from which to persuasively advocate an agenda. Former Stokes County Sheriff Mike Joyce Dies Of Cancer


STOKES COUNTY, N.C. (WXII) - Mike Joyce, the former sheriff in Stokes County, has died after a battle with cancer.

Joyce was elected sheriff in 1990 and served until 2010.

He died Thursday afternoon at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center.

Joyce worked in law enforcement in Stokes County for about 40 years, serving previously on the police force in Walnut Cove. He is the longest running sheriff in Stokes County history.

On his last day one year ago, the retiring sheriff said the thing he'd miss most were the people of Stokes County.

Current Sheriff Mike Marshall was elected last year after Joyce announced his retirement.
